  1. 1.According to Section 250 (5) of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, a resident is defined as: “This section defines the word “resident” as one who resides in this state with the goal of making it his or her permanent residence. Presumptive proof of residency in this state must be established by the fact that a person has maintained a place of habitation in this state for at least ninety days during that time.” It is considered “presumptive proof” that you have lived in New York State for 90 days if you have lived in a house, a residence, an apartment, a room, or other comparable location for at least 90 days during that time. This can be used as evidence by a police officer to give you a traffic citation if you are driving in New York State without a valid New York State driver license or vehicle registration card. A court will evaluate the legislation as well as the evidence of your purpose before determining whether or not you are a resident of New York. If you pay taxes in another state or your children attend school in another state, a judge will examine these factors while determining whether or not you intend to make New York State your “fixed and permanent” home. Students from other states or from other countries who attend school in New York State are generally not regarded to be citizens of the state, according to this statute. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) does not determine whether you are a resident of New York State, whether you must get a New York State driving license, or if you must register your car in New York State.

A REAL ID will be the only card version accepted beginning on May 3, 2023, for commercial air travel in the United States, admission into military bases, and some government buildings. REAL ID vs. Standard Identification Please read this page carefully and make sure you have your license with you when you go online to complete the renewal form.

  • To renew your license or ID online, you must ensure that none of your personal information on your existing license or ID has changed (name, address, license class). This means that you will obtain the same version of the card that you now have (for example, you will not be able to request a REAL ID if you presently have a normal license)
  • The option to renew your license or ID card online is only accessible for certain license or ID card renewals. At this moment, online applications for license or identification card replacements (due to loss or theft) are not accepted. A valid Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express card must be used by the applicant (debit or credit cards can be used). When you renew your membership online, a modest processing fee will be charged. (1.5 percent for debit cards, 2.75 percent for credit cards) If your application is not approved, your credit card will not be charged in any way. Once you have submitted your renewal application, you will not be eligible for a refund. Applicants may renew their licenses online up to six months before the expiration date of their license or up to one year after the expiration date of their license. Following approval of your application by the Transportation Cabinet, your credential will be mailed to the address we have on file in our system. While completing the application procedure, you will be asked to verify your address
  • At this point, applicants will be granted the same renewal lifespan as their present card. As a result, if your present license or ID card expires every four years, you will receive the same four-year renewal period while renewing online.

Exceptions:

  • Renewals of commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) and permits are not possible on the internet. Due to visa modifications, non-US nationals are unable to renew their driver’s licenses online. Under 21 licenses (Vertical Format) are unable to be renewed through the website. Please keep in mind that anybody who has attained the age of 21 can renew their license online. Due to the needed evidence, it is not possible to renew voter identification cards or homeless identification cards online.

By submitting an application, you are certifying that you satisfy the eligibility requirements to submit an online renewal application. Once you have submitted your renewal application, you will not be eligible for a refund. It is implied that you are acting on your own own when you use our service to complete a transaction on your behalf. Any application that is fraudulent will be prosecuted.

Driver’s License Types

The age at which you receive your Indiana driver’s license is deemed to be under 21. If you are under 21, your license is considered to be probationary. To be eligible for a probationary driver’s license in Indiana, you must be at least 18 years old and have held a learner’s permit for a minimum of 180 days (approximately six months). If you are under the age of eighteen, you may additionally be required to have a co-signer for financial responsibility as well as a record of supervised driving.

  • For a Probationary Driver’s License, you must be at least 18 years old. For those who have successfully completed an approved driver education program, the minimum age to receive a driver’s license is 16 years and 90 days, unless you are a minor. If you have not finished a driving education program that has been recognized by the state, you must be at least 16 years and 270 days old in order to receive a driver’s license. A probationary driver’s license is valid until the date of your 21st birthday and cannot be renewed. Following the day of your 21st birthday, you will have 30 days to renew your driver’s license before you will be subject to an administrative penalty. Learn more about obtaining a provisional driver’s license
  • Keep a record of your supervised driving. Persons holding a learner’s permit in Indiana are required to complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a qualified instructor, or they may choose one of the following options: If the individual is under the age of eighteen (18) years:
  • The driver must be a licensed driver with current driving privileges who is at least 25 years old and connected to the passenger by blood, marriage, or legal status. A spouse who has valid driving rights and is at least 21 years old
  • A child under the age of 21 who has legal driving privileges

If your learner’s permit is restricted to driving solely during daytime hours, you will not be required to complete the 10 hours of nighttime driving
  • Nevertheless, you will still be required to complete the required total of 50 hours. The Supervised Driving Log may be downloaded here. Examinations and Screening

It is necessary of all candidates that they undergo a vision screening, which tests their visual acuity.

Written Test

It is quite likely that if you are an Indiana resident and apply for a driver’s license, you will already have passed your written exam. However, there are several circumstances in which you may be required to take another written test, such as the following:

  • You have six or more points on your driving record and are renewing from a probationary driver’s license to a driver’s license
  • A driver’s license application is being processed for you since you have just relocated to Indiana from another nation. Your driver’s license has been expired for more than 180 days
  • You have a suspended license. Your driver’s license or business driver’s license has been revoked, and you want to add endorsements to it

With effect from July 1, 2019, if you are migrating to Indiana from another state and have a current driver’s license in that state, you will no longer be needed to take a written exam. Please keep in mind that some written examinations are necessary when transferring a CDL, motorcycle endorsement, or for-hire endorsement. If you want to take a written test, you must arrive at least one hour before the branch closes. The only time you need to arrange an appointment is if you need to have the exam read aloud, or if you are deaf or hard of hearing and need the test read to you.

The BMV’s Contact Center at 1-888-692-6841 can schedule appointments for applicants who are deaf or hard of hearing, or a branch manager can schedule an appointment for you. Find Out More About the Written Examination

If any of the following apply to you, you may renew or replace your driver’s license online:

Endorsements and Restrictions

In some cases, endorsements and limitations alter the conditions under which an individual is permitted to operate a motor vehicle. Identification cards are subject to the same endorsements and limits as other forms of identification. Additional Licensing and Endorsement Arrangements Indiana also provides business driver’s licenses, as well as motorcycle and for-hire endorsements, in addition to other types of licenses. A for-hire endorsement, in lieu of a public passenger chauffeur’s (PPC) or chauffeur’s license, became available on January 1, 2017, when the BMV implemented this policy.

Drivers with Disabilities

If you are at least 18 years old, disabled, and have successfully completed driver rehabilitation training conducted by a certified driver rehabilitation specialist recognized by the BMV, you may apply for a driver’s license without having a learner’s permit on your record or without having a completed Log of Supervised Driving on file with the department. Upon completion of the driver rehabilitation specialist’s course, you will be expected to submit a report to the local BMV branch.

Out-of-Country Licenses

A driver’s license issued by a foreign nation cannot be used for identifying purposes in the United States. An out-of-country driver’s license must be in the English language, or the license must be accompanied by a verifiably correct English translation of the document from the original language. To acquire an Indiana driver’s license if you have an out-of-country driver’s license and wish to become a resident of the state of Indiana, you must pass the vision screening, written exam, and driving test.

The BMV will issue an interim license, which will be valid for 30 days and will allow the user to drive while the documents supplied are being authenticated.

You will receive a letter detailing the decision and your rights to request an administrative hearing to have the decision reviewed.
