Why You Might Want To Renew Your Driver’s License Early, Maybe Very Early

The process of issuing state driver’s licenses has undergone significant alterations. The procedure is increasingly being influenced by federal regulations. As a result of these modifications, it is recommended that most persons begin the renewal process far sooner than they would otherwise do so. If you’re relocating to another state or your license is about to expire, you should anticipate the process to be more time-consuming and difficult than it has been in the past. The REAL ID Act, which was passed by Congress in 2005, is responsible for the improvements.

Because the rules phase in the execution of the legislation, not many people paid attention to what was going on.

Beginning on October 1, 2020, if you wish to use your state driver’s license or other identity card to board a federally controlled commercial aircraft, access a secure federal facility, or visit a military site, you must have a special state identification card.

When my family and I relocated to a different state last autumn, I became aware of the REAL ID laws and process.

  1. That notion was quickly dispelled by a fast perusal of the state’s web site, followed by chats with a number of our new friends in the neighborhood.
  2. I found the rest of the procedure to be quite straightforward after that.
  3. One neighbor had to go to the DMV five times before she was able to get her license.
  4. Because the REAL ID Act specifies minimum security criteria for the issue of state driver’s licenses and identity cards, these documents serve as the first stage in the security process, according to one explanation.
  5. The second point is that DMV staff are the ones who decide whether or not a piece of documentation is acceptable.
  6. There is no other avenue of appeal.
  7. One of us had personal experience with a paper being approved on one visit but not on another, and others shared their own stories of having the same problem.
  8. First and foremost, you will require identification.
  9. Your previous driver’s license or identification card will not suffice.
  10. The necessity for a birth certificate might be problematic for persons who do not have valid passports that have not expired yet.

It was rejected on the second visit by both the individual behind the counter and his or her supervisor, despite the fact that it clearly stated on the reverse, “This document is to be used as evidence of birth.” Some other persons who had misplaced their birth certificates said that it took them a significant amount of time and effort to get duplicate copies of their birth certificates.

  1. Second, you’ll need to provide documentation proving your Social Security number.
  2. It causes difficulties for certain individuals.
  3. Fortunately, I also serve on a board that pays a small honorarium, classifies board members as workers, and provides W-2s to those who meet the requirements.
  4. As a result, their W-2s are deemed insufficient proof.
  5. During a conversation with a senior gentleman, he said that his Social Security card had gotten rather worn over the years.
  6. For the purposes of this procedure, the DMV is obligated to scan all of the papers you provide and retain them on file as a permanent record.) However, after multiple failed tries, the clerk determined that the most recent scan was sufficient.
  7. If you’re applying for a driver’s license renewal and haven’t relocated, your expired driver’s license can be used as one form of evidence of residency.

After moving, it might take several weeks or months to amass mail and other papers that can serve as proof of your new location.

The discretion of DMV staff can sometimes present issues, particularly for married couples who are in a difficult financial situation.

We’ve heard from our neighbors that some DMV staff would only accept utility bills, while others are aware of the larger list and will accept a variety of other mail and paperwork.

The spouse whose name is not on the bills cannot use them as proof of address, even if they can demonstrate that they are legally married to the person who is on the invoices.

Some of the utilities, strangely enough, would only put one name on the invoices.

The simplest approach to show this is to hold an unexpired U.S.

Note that an unexpired passport meets the first and fourth conditions.

This is particularly troublesome for a lady who’s been married more than once and changed last names each time.

You also must have registered your latest name change with the Social Security Administration.

In all these requirements, scans or other copies of government-issued documents aren’t acceptable.

Another inconvenience for some people is that you no longer are allowed to keep your old license, whether it was issued by your current state of residence or a different one.

You can see why I recommend that many people begin the renewal process for a driver’s license well before the expiration date.

The state will issue you a regular driver’s license without requiring the higher level of documentation. You might find it easier to keep your U.S. passport current and use that or other documentation accepted by DHS to board commercial aircraft and enter other secure areas.
