Temporary License

When you apply for a driver’s license or non-driver identity, you will be issued a temporary paper license or temporary paper non-driver identification, which will be valid for 30 days. The temporary license/identification card is good for 45 days; the permanent card will be delivered to your Vermont postal address within 7-10 business days after receiving your temporary license/identification card. The temporary license/identification card is printed on paper and contains a digital picture in black and white.

Use of Temporary License for Identification Purposes

When used as a stand-alone document, your temporary Driver’s License is valid for driving purposes alone. If you want to use your temporary license for any other reason other than identification, you may be required to present a secondary form of identification as well. If you are unclear if a particular company or organization will accept your temporary license or other non-driver identification for identification purposes, you should inquire directly with the organization or business concerned.

It is only your permanent license or non-driver identity card that will be REAL ID compatible, as it will be delivered to you directly.

You will only receive a permanent license or non-driver identity card that is completely compatible with Real ID or EDL requirements if you request it by mail.

Mailing Address

In order to get your permanent Driver’s License or Non-Driver Identification, you must provide a current and valid postal address to the Department. If you have one of the following problems with your mailing address, you will not receive your permanent license/identification card:

  • Your current address is not the one on file with the DMV
  • Thus, you must update it. You have had your mail moved to a different address
  • Mail from the DMV will not be forwarded. You have registered with the Post Office as “temporarily gone”
  • Nevertheless, you have not yet returned.

If your mailing address on file with the DMV is wrong, you must submit an address change request to get it corrected. Please keep in mind that we provide a specific mailing option if you need your license/ID shipped to a temporary address.

Tracking Your License

Your permanent Driver’s License or Non-Driver Identification Card should arrive in the mail around 7-10 business days after you submit your application, provided that your mailing address is valid. If you applied for a license or identity card more than 20 days ago and have not yet received your permanent card, please contact us for further assistance.

Temporary Driver’s License FAQ

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) installed new picture technology and equipment at its 97 Photo License Centers around the state in late October 2007, as part of an attempt to make our products more secure. During the month of March 2008, the new photo technology and equipment were fully operational. This version includes a new overlay and security features for all driver’s license (DL), picture identification (Photo ID), and identification (ID) goods, which helps to reduce the risk of identity theft.

As an additional measure to complement the new overlay and security features on all driver’s license products, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is issuing temporary driver’s licenses and photo identification cards to individuals who have never held a Pennsylvania driver’s license or photo identification card, such as new drivers and new residents.

The customer will complete all initial verifications to prove identity and residency prior to receiving a temporary driver’s license or photo identification card (e.g., verification of Social Security number, proof of birth certificate, and proof of immigration or naturalization credentials) while at a PennDOT Driver License Center.

  • This helps PennDOT identify individuals who may have committed identity theft.
  • PennDOT also use this cutting-edge facial recognition technology for the same reason when individuals have their photographs taken for the purpose of renewing their driver’s license or identity card, as well as other applications.
  • The product may be used by any business to authenticate information such as name, age, residence, and so on, in the same way that a permanent driver’s license or photo ID card can.
  • What was the motivation behind PennDOT upgrading its photo license centers?
  • In this technological update, every piece of equipment that was previously utilized to create a driver’s license/identification card was replaced.
  • What is the purpose of releasing temporary products?
  • Individuals who are suspected of committing identity theft will be identified using this new method.

3.

Driver’s License is up for Renewal or Expires While You are Out of State

If you are out of state when your driver’s license expires, you may be able to get a free temporary extension permit from the DMV. The permit permits you to lawfully drive when your license is expired, with the expectation that you will be returning home within the time range given on the permit, providing you meet the other requirements. Your loan can be provided for up to 180 days, but the exact length of time will be determined by the circumstances of your case. There is only one permission given, and after it has expired, it cannot be extended or reissued.

Consequently, you should renew your driver’s license as soon as feasible once you have re-established residency in Michigan.

When leaving the state, commercial drivers are recommended to renew their license before leaving the country if they have any doubt about returning in time before their license expires.

However, failing the driving exams or not having enough time to complete the other prerequisites, which vary according on the age of the applicant, might cause the procedure to be delayed. Renewing Your Temporary Driving Permit

If you find yourself in the position of needing to renew your Ohio temporary driving permit, the good news is that you won’t have to go through the six-month waiting period again if you’re under the age of 18 and planning to take your driving tests for the first time shortly afterward. You’ll need to locate your current permit card, as well as any other essential things from the Ohio BMV’s approved documents list, before you may go to the driver’s exam station.

Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is authorized to do so.

Driver licenses and ID cards are mailed

In the spring of 2012, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) implemented “centralized issuance” of all driver licenses and identification cards. All items are sent from a single manufacturing site. Customers are given a printed receipt that is valid for 45 days after they leave the DMV customer care facility. It is valid picture identification for voting purposes, and the receipt, which includes your photo, serves as your license or identity until your card comes in the mail. Please keep in mind that a receipt will not be accepted as identification when applying for a Social Security Number replacement card.

Wisconsin driver license and ID cards issued Fall 2015

Wisconsin’s new driver license and identification card design, which will go into effect in the fall of 2015, will have the most advanced security measures currently available in the United States. Starting in the Fall of 2015, sample cards will be available.

What will you notice about your new card?

  • There are black and white photographs in this collection. The Wisconsin State Capitol structure, the Wisconsin State flag, and a Sugar Maple leaf are depicted in a stunning representation
  • A message stating that the card is not intended for federal purposes is printed on non-REAL ID compliant cards in accordance with Department of Homeland SecurityREAL IDregulations.

WARNING: The Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) provides REAL ID compatible items (designated with an a) in compliance with the federal Real ID Act of 2005. Beginning on May 3, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security will require identification that is REAL ID compliant (or another acceptable form of identification, such as a passport) if you plan to fly within the United States, visit a military base, or visit other federal buildings. This is the new deadline for this Federal requirement.

Notifications printed on Wisconsin Driver Licenses and ID Cards that are required by state and/or federal law:

  • ASTAR The compliance symbol in the top right corner of the card shows that the card complies with the criteria of the FederalREAL IDAct.
  • A card marked NOT FOR FEDERAL PURPOSES implies that it does not meet the standards of the Federal REAL ID Act.
  • TEMPORARY IN NATURE represents the fact that the bearer of the license or identification card is a non-immigrant (Temporary Visitor) with legal status in the United States
  • This shows that the CDL license holder is a non-immigrant (Temporary Visitor) who has legal standing in the United States.

How are these cards more secure?

Starting in the Fall of 2015, sample under 21 cards will be available.

  • Detailed black and white photographs are laser etched onto a very high-quality polycarbonate card to create the cards. There are no layers between the photo and the solid card
  • The photo is completely merged. The process generates two high-definition, high-contrast pictures, making it far more difficult to produce a counterfeit of the card.

Who gets a new driver license/ID card?

  • All Wisconsin driver licenses and identification cards will be valid until the date on which they expire. Persons whose cards are about to expire will receive the regular notification to renew. The process does not alter at this point. There is no need to arrive early to pick up a new product
  • Instead, use the interactiveDriver License Guide to create a tailored checklist of papers to bring with you and get assistance with paperwork.
