How to Replace a Lost Florida License

While it can be upsetting to not know where your license has gone (or to know precisely where it has gone but be unable to get it back), it is not the end of the world if you cannot find it. Replacing your lost Florida drivers license is a relatively simple procedure that takes only a few minutes. What you need to do is as follows.

Apply for a Replacement

There are two options for replacing a Florida drivers license: you may apply for a replacement Florida drivers license online, or you can go to a local DMV office. In order to obtain a replacement Florida driver license or identification card in person, go to the local driver licensing office and fill out an application for a replacement. In order to do so, you will need to ensure that you have documentation that proves both your identity and your place of residence on hand. But, which documents should you bring with you to the meeting?

Proof of Identity

One of the following papers, either in its original form or a certified copy, will be required:

  • Birth certificate from the United States
  • A valid passport or passport card from the United States
  • Certificate of Naturalization
  • Certificate of Citizenship
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad

Proof of Social Security Number

An original of one of the following papers, which must include both your complete name and your Social Security number, will be required to fulfill this requirement:

  • Identification card
  • Social Security card W-2 form (which may or may not be written by hand)
  • SSA-1099
  • Any 1099 that is not written by hand
  • Any 1099 that is not handwritten by hand Paycheck/paystub

Proof of Residential Address

For you to be able to prove your residential address, you will need two separate documents from the list below that clearly reflect your residence address:

  • A Florida voter registration card
  • A Florida vehicle registration or title
  • A deed, mortgage, monthly mortgage statement, mortgage payment booklet, or a residential rental/lease agreement
  • And a Florida driver’s license or identification card. Two documents demonstrating verification from your parent, step-parent, legal guardian, or other person with whom you reside, as well as an affidavit from one of these people
  • The following documents are required: Florida boat registration or title (if you reside on a boat/houseboat)
  • Automobile payment booklet
  • Selective Service card. a medical or health card having your name and address on it W-2 or 1099 tax forms are used. Car insurance policy or law that is currently in effect

Once you’ve acquired all of the necessary documentation, you may travel down to the driver licensing office and submit an application for a new license.

If your license was taken and you filed a police complaint, you will be expected to pay a replacement charge; however, this price will be waived in this situation. Remember to bring a copy of the police report with you to the appointment to apply for a replacement license.

What If I’m Out of State?

If you are temporarily out of state and want a replacement license to be shipped to you, you can buy one either online or through the mail. You will be needed to submit a request for a change of address to your current out-of-state location. When you return to Florida, be sure you update the address to reflect your usual Florida address. Additionally, if you are out of state and would like to wait until you return to Florida before applying for a new license, you can seek a 90-day temporary permit.

  • You can reach us by phone at (850) 617-2000. By email

  • By faxing to:Bureau of Records2900 Apalachee Parkway, MS 92Tallahassee, Florida 32399-0575

Regardless of the method you pick, you will be required to supply your full name, date of birth, Social Security number, out-of-state address, and Florida driving license number, among other information. You will not be required to pay any fees in exchange for the permission. When you return to Florida, all you have to do is go to the driver licensing office and ask to be granted a replacement driving license.

Special Cases

Certain situations need the use of distinct requirements. A driver license application must be submitted in person at a driver license office, for example, if you are an immigrant (you will not be able to apply any other way). You will be needed to pay a $25 charge and to submit documentation of your legal presence in the country. Please keep in mind that if you filed a police complaint for a stolen license, the charge will be waived; all you need to do is bring a copy of the police report with you to the driver licensing office.

Upon receiving your temporary permission, you will also get replacement license instructions and a 90-day extension of time.
