A California driver’s license (DL) is a piece of identification that grants you authorization to operate a motor vehicle in the state. It contains your genuine complete name, birthdate, postal address, signature (if applicable), photograph (if applicable), and physical description (if applicable). When operating a motor vehicle, you must have the card in your possession at all times. To operate a motor vehicle in California, you must have a valid driver’s license. Learn about the several types of DLs that are available, as well as the prerequisites for applying for one.
There is an application cost for new drivers’ licenses, renewals, and replacements.
There are two primary types of DLs: noncommercial and commercial, which are further divided into subcategories. There are several sub-categories of licenses available under the noncommercial category, each of which authorizes drivers to operate certain types of motor vehicles. California Driver Handbook, as well as the California Driver Handbook, provide further information on the categories and sub-types of licenses. Noncommercial DLs are classified into four categories:
- Basic DL (Class C): A regular vehicle or truck for personal use on California highways and highways in California
- Motorcycle (Class M1 or M2): A motorized vehicle with two wheels. How to obtain a motorbike license is explained in detail. The following conditions apply to a travel trailer or fifth wheel (Noncommercial Class A): a trailer coach with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 10,000 pounds (where the towing is not for pay)
- Housecar/motorhome (Noncommercial Class B): more than 40 feet in length but not greater than 45 feet in length (with endorsement)
All noncommercial driver’s licenses are available as either REAL ID compliant or federal non-compliant cards, depending on the situation. Once you have completed the criteria for your provisional instruction permit, you will be entitled to sit for your driving examination. You must do the following:

- At least 10 of the 50 practice hours should be spent driving at night.
To take your driving test, you must do the following:
- Make an appointment for your driving test (driving tests are not given without an appointment). Make an appointment by calling 1-800-777-0133 during regular business hours
- This number is available 24/7. Provide proof of financial responsibility (insurance) that meets or exceeds the standards of the State of California.
You must wait 14 days (not counting the day on which the exam was failed) before you may retake the driving test if you fail your driving test the first time. A cost of $7 is charged for retesting. You must reapply if you fail the driving exam three times. Once you pass the driving test, the DMV will offer you a temporary driver’s license (DL) until your new driver’s license arrives in the mail. The temporary driver’s license is valid for 60 days after it is issued. Within 3-4 weeks, you will receive your driving license in the mail.
To operate a motor vehicle in California, all citizens must have a valid California driver’s license. The conditions for your application will differ depending on your specific scenario (see below).
Situation1: “I’ve never had a DL.”
In the event that you are above the age of 18 and have never held a driver’s license in any state or nation, you may be eligible for an instruction permit until you are ready to take your driving test. An instruction permit for provisional driving is only available to drivers under the age of eighteen. An instruction permission would be provided to anyone who is over the age of eighteen. Once you have completed the criteria for the instruction permit, you will be able to take the driving test to obtain your California driver’s license.

If you already have a valid driver’s license from another state, follow these steps to apply for a California driver’s license:

How to Check Driver’s License Status online
Many states enable drivers to check the status of their licenses online, which is quite convenient. The method through which you may get the information and the quantity of data offered differs from state to state. If you require assistance in comprehending the information shown, please contact your state’s agency.
Accessing Your Record
Visit the website of the Department of Motor Vehicles in your state and look for the ‘License Check’ or ‘License Status’ page to check your license status. You’ll need to submit some personal information, such as your driver’s license number, in order to gain access to your online records. Some states may require further information. To get a driver’s license in Alabama, you must provide your last name along with your license number and expiration date, whereas Idaho demands your complete name along with your date of birth as well as your license number or Social Security number.
The status of your license will be displayed on the next page, indicating whether it is valid, expired, suspended, or revoked at the time of viewing.
While the laws differ from state to state, your license normally expires on your birthday four to eight years after you receive it. Some states allow you to renew your license for up to two years, but you will not be able to drive lawfully until you do. In some states, you may be able to renew an expired license online, depending on your state legislation.
For example, if your license has been expired for more than the state’s grace period, you will be required to apply for a new license and pass the knowledge test, eye test, and driving skills test all over again before you may drive again.
In most states, your license expires on the day of your birthday after four to eight years, however the laws vary. Some states allow you to renew your license for up to two years, but you won’t be able to drive lawfully unless you do so first. Your state rules may allow you to renew an expired license online, so check with them before proceeding. You would have to apply for a new license, and you would have to pass all of the tests again, including the knowledge exam, eye test, and driving skills test, if your license has been expired for longer than your state’s grace period.
It is also against the law to drive when one’s license has been revoked. A revocation is more permanent than a suspension since you lose your license for a longer length of time, and there are no assurances that it will be reinstated after you have met the standards for reinstatement. Infractions that can result in a license revocation include having your license suspended three times in a short period of time (five years in Georgia), refusing to retake knowledge and driving skills tests, and demonstrating incompetence or inability to drive due to a disability, illness, or drug or alcohol addiction.
Points on Your License
Some states have a point-based system in which points are awarded for each sort of traffic infringement. For every time you break traffic regulations, your vehicle services department will record the violation and add points to your record. Once you have accrued the maximum number of points permitted by your state, you may be subject to suspension or loss of your driving privileges. In Georgia, for example, if you have 15 points on your driving record, your license would be suspended. If your state makes use of this system, the results of your online status check will include your points total.
