When operating a motor vehicle, you must have the card in your possession at all times. To operate a motor vehicle in California, you must have a valid driver’s license.

How to Check the Status of Drivers License Renewal in California

Fanjianhua/iStock/GettyImages Your California driver’s license expires on the same day of your birthday every five years. The California Department of Motor Vehicles will mail you a renewal notification approximately two months before that date, informing you of the process, including when, where, and how to renew your license. According to your license status, you can complete this process in person, online, by mail, or over the phone if necessary. You may also check the status of your renewal by using any of the ways listed above, but calling the DMV is probably the most convenient option.

How to Renew Your License

Fanjianhua/iStock/GettyImages On the anniversary of your birthday, your California driver’s license will expire after the fifth year of its issuance. The California Department of Motor Vehicles will mail you a renewal notification approximately two months before that date, informing you of the process, including when, where, and how to renew.

Depending on your license status, you may be able to complete this process in person, online, by mail, or over the phone. In addition to using any of these options, you may phone the DMV to find out whether or not your license has expired.

Wait 90 Days

The California Department of Motor Vehicles accepts online renewal applications within three weeks, while applications submitted through other means are processed within 60 days. In the event that your old license expires, you will be issued a temporary license that you can use until your new license arrives. The duration of this license is 90 days. After 60 days, if you haven’t gotten your new license, you can begin to investigate the status of your renewal application. Keep in mind that in California, there is no grace period for having a driver’s license that has expired.

Call the DMV

Calling the California Department of Motor Vehicles at (800) 777-0133 is the quickest and most convenient way to find out the status of your application. You could be put on hold for 10 or 15 minutes — with the customary “muzak” to keep you entertained while you wait — but once you get a DMV operator on the line, he or she will be able to check up your application and tell you whether or not your license renewal has been approved or denied. To complete the transaction, you will need to supply him with your last name as well as your driver’s license number (or Renewal Identification Number).

Check the Status Online

You’ll need to be a registered user in order to access the online status check, but if you applied for the renewal online, this should be a simple process. Follow the on-screen steps after navigating to the California DMV’s “Driver License Application Status” page, logging into your account, and completing the required fields. Because the state of California’s web service is automated, you should be aware that the information you receive may not be totally current. In general, the status of transactions executed within the last two business days may not be reflected in the status.

Driving Without a Valid License Is Illegal

Driving with an expired license is prohibited in the state of California. Make sure to keep up with the DMV and to check on the status of your application before your temporary license expires. Visiting the DMV in person and explaining your case is highly recommended if you are approaching the 90-day expiration date on your temporary license. They may be able to prolong your temporary license until your renewal has been processed and approved.
