How to Find a Copy of Your Driver’s License Online

SolisImages/iStock/GettyImages Without a valid driver’s license in all 50 states, it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle. If yours has been lost, damaged, or stolen, you should replace it immediately. The majority of states now enable drivers to apply for a new license online, and some even supply a printable version that you may use in the meantime. It differs from state to state how to apply for a replacement license and acquire an online copy of your license.

Applying for a Replacement License Online

It is the responsibility of each state’s department of motor vehicles to provide a website that contains information about the different requirements for driving in that state. A section for online services that outlines the possibility to apply for a new license if yours has gone lost or has been stolen is frequently seen in the online services section. Complete an application form with identifying information, such as your name, license number and Social Security number, and submit it along with a processing fee to the appropriate agency.

The amount of the charge varies from state to state.

Temporary License

While drivers are waiting for their new license to come in the mail, some jurisdictions, such as Texas and New Mexico, supply them with a temporary license to use while they wait. It is created automatically at the conclusion of the application procedure and contains the same information that will be printed on the new license. Temporary licenses are only valid for a short period of time and must be destroyed once the permanent license is received.

Considerations

It is mandatory in most states for you to renew or replace your driver’s license in person if any of your information has changed, such as your name or address. You may also need to have a new photo taken or pass a vision exam. If your license has been suspended, canceled, or revoked, you will not be able to apply for a duplicate copy of it. In the event of identity theft, several states urge that you report a stolen license to the local police station. Other states demand it, and they want it completed before you can submit an application for a replacement.

  • It is customary for temporary licenses to be valid for at least one month. For example, in Maine, it is valid for 60 days, but in Texas, it is valid for 45 days. In some jurisdictions, the temporary license is the receipt or confirmation page that you receive at the end of the application process
  • In other states, the temporary license is the actual license.
