What is an Enhanced Driver’s License?

An Enhanced Driver’s License (“EDL”) is a driver’s license that may also be used as a border-crossing card in some situations. It is made available to Michigan residents who are also citizens of the United States through the Michigan Secretary of State’s office. Additionally, in a number of other states and jurisdictions, including Ontario, EDLs are available. When it comes to meeting the stricter federal document requirements, this optional card is the most convenient, most inexpensive, and most flexible choice for travelers.

Those who currently have a valid driver’s license will find the application procedure to be reasonably straightforward.

The entire procedure takes around four weeks.

It is necessary to produce the real license if you are picking up your bib with an EDL; simply presenting the application with a receipt is not acceptable. When applying for an EDL, you must give enough time for the State of Michigan to issue you the required license before proceeding.

It’s time to get a REAL ID. Here’s everything to know about what it is and how to get one.

Your standard driver’s license simply isn’t up to the task any longer. In order to travel in the United States after May 3, 2023, all passengers must have a REAL ID, which is a state-issued upgraded driver’s license, or another accepted form of identification from another country. The deadline was originally set by Oct. 1 of this year, but the Department of Homeland Security extended it by almost a year and a half as a result of the epidemic. “Protecting the health, safety, and security of our communities is our number one concern,” according to the release.

According to Aneta Kiersnowski, press secretary at the office of Michigan’s secretary of state, as of August 24, 61.9 percent of Michiganders already have a REAL ID card, while 38.1 percent do not.

What is a REAL ID?

According to the Department of Homeland Security, the move is intended to make the country’s identification cards more “uniform and safe.” As part of the REAL ID Act, which was passed by Congress in 2005, the government implemented a suggestion made by the 9/11 Commission, which said that the government should “establish criteria for the issue of forms of identity, such as driver’s licenses.” REAL IDs, which are a set of national standards, are necessary for accessing several government facilities, including nuclear power plants, as well as domestic airport travel, among other things.

Border crossings and overseas travel will continue to need the use of a valid United States passport.

How do I get a REAL ID?

Residents of Michigan can apply for a REAL ID card at any time, or they can wait until it’s time to renew their prior driver’s license before applying for one.

  1. Make a scheduled appointment. It is not possible to apply for a REAL ID card by mail or online
  2. Instead, you must schedule an appointment in person. You may schedule an appointment by clicking on this link. At the appointment, your photo will be taken, and you will be asked to pay all applicable fees and charges. If you submit your application within your usual renewal period, there is no additional price. Prepare ahead of time by bringing your Michigan driver’s license or state identification card, as well as a government-issued birth certificate, a valid United States passport, or an authorized citizenship or legal presence document. In addition, you must bring in a documented name-change document, such as a marriage license or a court order, for those whose names differ from those shown on their birth certificates. This includes women who have changed their names via marriages.

If your REAL ID will serve as your initial driver’s license or state identification card, you will need to provide extra proof.

What happens if I don’t have one?

  • Starting on May 3, 2023, you will not be permitted to pass through airport security checkpoints if you have a driver’s license that is not a REAL ID. Customers will be able to renew or replace enhanced driver’s licenses and state ID cards online, check the status of a requested driver’s license or state ID card, request and obtain a driving record, add motorcycle endorsements to licenses, and access other business services beginning on March 16th. The increased availability of online services is the outcome of an attempt to simplify the Secretary of State’s office function and capabilities that began in 2019. The Secretary of State, Jocelyn Benson, said in a statement that customers will now be able to renew or replace their driver’s licenses and identification cards at any of the more than 130 new self-service stations across the state, as well as renew or replace their enhanced licenses and identification cards online. “Even throughout the epidemic, we have continued to develop and improve our client offerings and service, and this improvement will truly make our operations better than ever.”

A Message from Michigan’s Secretary of State

It is anticipated that the federal government will fully enforce the Post-9/11 REAL ID Act on October 1, 2020, at which point standard state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards will no longer be accepted for boarding domestic flights within the United States or for entry into certain federal facilities, such as military bases and nuclear power stations. People who have a valid United States passport or a DHS Trusted Traveler Card or an Enhanced Driver’s License already have a REAL ID document.

It is possible to convert a Michigan driver’s license or identity card into a REAL ID-compliant document by visiting a Secretary of State branch office and providing the relevant documentation.

Here is what you must do in order to obtain a REAL ID:

  • Make an appointment at one of our branch offices by visiting this website or calling 888-SOS-MICH (888-SOS MICH). You can schedule an appointment at any branch around the state, and you are not required to present a renewal mailer in order to do so. In order to ensure a spot at one of our locations, we recommend making your reservation at least a few weeks before your intended travel date. Upon completion of the application process, you will be mailed your REAL ID license or state ID card. Bring your driver’s license or state identity card with you to the meeting. Your verified birth certificate with a raised seal or stamp issued by a government body, your valid, unexpired United States passport, or an approved citizenship or legal presence document are all acceptable forms of identification. (Please note that faxes and photocopies are not acceptable.) It is necessary to bring verified documentation for each and every change in your name, such as marriage licenses or court decrees, if your name is different from the one on your birth certificate.

The cost of changing a driver’s license or state identification card into a standard REAL ID is waived if the change is made during your regular renewal period; otherwise, a duplicate card price of $9.00 or $10.00 will be assessed. Please see this link for further details. ‍

Which One Do I Need? Standard, Enhanced & REAL ID-Compliant Michigan Licenses & IDs

Beginning on Monday, August 28, 2017, Michigan citizens will be able to apply for driver’s licenses and identification cards that are compatible with the REAL ID Act. What you need to know about them is as follows: Individuals who do not have a passport or other acceptable form of identification can use these kinds of identification to board domestic flights, enter government buildings, nuclear power plants, and military bases, as long as they follow federal laws. Starting on October 1, 2020, regular licenses and IDs that are not REAL ID-compliant will no longer be valid for these purposes, necessitating the usage of alternative identification.

REAL ID-compliant licenses and IDs will not have a radio frequency identification (RFID) chip, in contrast to an improved driver’s license (see below for further information on this).

In addition, “Should You Apply for a REAL ID-compliant License or ID When Renewal?,” “Should You Apply for a REAL ID-compliant License or ID When Renewal?” and “REAL ID Frequently Asked Questions” are also available online.

What about an enhanced driver’s license?

There are still two compelling arguments for considering one of these over a normal or REAL ID-compliant driver’s license: first, they are more affordable. First and foremost, an improved license is equipped with an RFID chip, which provides increased security and allows for speedier border crossings. According to the Secretary of State, this makes an upgraded license “particularly useful for business travel, vacations, and brief travels,” among other things. Second, a Michigan enhanced driver’s license is already REAL ID-compliant, making it a valid form of federal identification well before of the October 1, 2020, deadline for obtaining such identification.

“A driver’s license may not be sufficient identification to board an aircraft in 2018,” and “Is your state’s driver’s license TSA compliant?” Listed below is some more fundamental information, including instructions on how to receive your improved license:

What is an enhanced driver’s license?

According to the Secretary of State, an upgraded driver’s license is a cost-effective and handy document that may be used for driving, identification, and border crossing purposes while also being cost effective. If you are going by land or water from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, or the Caribbean, you will need to have a federally authorized document to re-enter the United States of America. However, even though it is not necessary, the enhanced license is a good alternative to a basic license since it is particularly useful for business travel, vacations, and brief getaways.

How does an enhanced license differ from a standard license?

As stated by the Secretary of State: “All driver’s licenses and state ID cards issued by the Secretary of State are protected by security measures that are industry best practices, preventing the card from being illegally reproduced or used.” The following are some of the specific features of the enhanced license or ID: a. A radio frequency identification (RFID) chip to expedite the process of passing international borders. The RFID chip does not include any information that may be used to identify a person.

In addition, while the card is not in use, it has a protective sleeve that prevents the RFID chip from being read.

A picture of the United States flag on the front, showing that the person is a citizen of the United States.

The phrase “Enhanced” is printed on the face of the card.

Is an enhanced license more expensive?

There isn’t much else to say. When you purchase an enhanced license, it will cost you $45, with renewals (every four years) costing you $38, as opposed to a basic license, which costs $25 to purchase and $18 to renew.

How do I get an enhanced license?

It is necessary to visit a Secretary of State office in order to upgrade to an upgraded license; upgrading online or through the mail is not currently accessible. You’ll need to bring the following items: Your Social Security card is an important piece of identification. Proof of citizenship is required (like your birth certificate) Identification and proof of residence are required (like your current license) Then it should be a straightforward process of having your photo taken and paying the price.

Visit the Secretary of State’s page on enhanced driver’s licenses for much more in-depth information, which includes a very extensive and useful FAQ section as well.

» Enhanced Driver’s Licenses – What They Are and Where to Get Them

A total of four states have already begun to issue what are known as Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (EDLs). These licenses are equipped with radio frequency identification (RFID) chips, and persons who possess these special licenses are put into a database maintained by the Department of Homeland Security to track their movements. The program is now only available in four states along the Canadian border: Michigan; New York; Vermont; and Washington. It is designed to make it easier for people to cross the border from the United States to Canada.

This reduces the amount of time people must wait at the border for everyone.

To submit an application, you must visit a Secretary of State office and complete the necessary forms:

  • Demonstrate a valid Social Security Number, US Citizenship, identification, and Michigan residency to be eligible. a new photograph should be taken
  • Pay a $45 processing charge

New York, NY: New York drivers who wish to upgrade their existing driver’s license to an EDL can do so by contacting their local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). You will need the following items in order to apply:

  • Documentation of Social Security Number, identification of name, and documentation of New York residency are required. A $30 enhanced document charge and a $12.50 document processing fee must be paid.

Vermont residents who are also citizens of the United States are eligible to apply for an EDL. Due to the fact that not all Vermont DMVs are now issuing EDLs, it is important to look for a list of offices that do offer them. To be considered, you must bring the following items with you:

  • An ELD Application that has been fully completed
  • A valid operator’s license is required. Proof of Social Security Number, identity, United States Citizenship, and Vermont Residency are all required. In addition to the usual driver’s license price (which varies depending on whether you are renewing, changing, or receiving your first license), you must pay a $25 EDL charge.

Residents of the state of Washington can receive an EDL if they complete the qualifications for a Washington intermediate driver license, which is the license that most new drivers obtain when they first start driving. In Washington, you will require the following items:

  • Proof of citizenship, identity, and residency in the state of Washington
  • Your social security number (you do not need to bring your card)
  • To pay a fee, you can use cash, cheque, or an acceptable credit card
  • The charge is $15 for upgrading to an EDL and $35 for getting an EDL for the first time.

California, Arizona, and Texas driver’s licenses may also be upgraded in the near future, making crossing the US-Mexico border easier for citizens of the United States of America. These states are presently evaluating the best alternatives for supplying the cards, as well as the implications for border security. California was on the verge of allowing EDLs; the law had passed the state senate; but, privacy concerns have caused the plan to be shelved. There was nothing in the legislation to prevent California law enforcement from accessing the RFID chips, which has raised concerns among privacy advocates that the chip may be used to track and retain more information than the average person realizes.

  1. According to the Department of Homeland Security’s website, the RFID chip on the card contains no information that may be used to identify the cardholder.
  2. The EDL is also equipped with a protected sleeve, which prohibits anybody from viewing your license without your knowledge or permission.
  3. Almost all of these ports are already equipped with RFID readers that can read both passports and electronic driving licenses.
  4. So far, EDLs have been issued to citizens of the provinces of British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec, among other places.
  5. EDLs will also allow those whose primary travel destination is Canada or Mexico to save money and time on the process of acquiring a passport, because the EDL will act as both their driver’s license and an identification card that will allow them to cross the border.

A driver’s license with additional features The term “enhanced ID” refers to a card that serves as both a driving license and an identification card with limited passport features. It is issued in some provinces of Canada and certain states of the United States, as well as for people who are both citizens of the country and residents of the relevant region, and it is compliant with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI). When it comes to foreign travel, an EDL is a combination driver’s license and passport card, which means it may be used for both land and sea travel, but not air travel, in countries that accept it.

  • A valid EDL may be used for “official purposes” (such as boarding a domestic aircraft) that are covered by the United States REAL ID Act since it is consistent with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI).
  • To be clear, REAL ID-compliant licenses alone are not adequate for crossing international borders, even if a state uses a similar name for its REAL ID-compliant licenses while other states do not.
  • EDLs are accessible to Canadian residents residing in British Columbia and Manitoba, as well as in Ontario and Quebec, where they were formerly available.
  • Since the 30th of September, 2014, no new Driver’s Licence Plus papers have been issued.
  • Manitoba stated in February 2021 that it will phase down the improved driver’s licenses and enhanced identity cards beginning in 2022, effective immediately.

Cross the border with Michigan’s enhanced driver’s license

Despite the fact that I wasn’t technically at a border crossing between Canada and the United States, my new upgraded Michigan driver’s license was catching attention at the Target checkout line. Following my successful removal of the card from its little white and blue protective envelope in my wallet, the woman behind me in line inquired, “Omigosh, are our new driver’s licenses going to have a bar code?” The unique envelope that comes with the new license protects it from being read by illegal Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) readers.

Michigan REAL ID: What Is It and Why Do I Need One To Fly? » WDET 101.9FM

Despite the fact that Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson claims the REAL ID requirement is necessary to comply with a 2005 federal law, you may not necessarily require one. Passengers travelling within the United States will be required to provide more stringent identification requirements, and those who do not comply will be denied boarding if they do not have the appropriate identity. WDET photo by Jake Neher Beginning on October 1, 2020, anybody wishing to travel within the United States will be required to fulfill the new REAL ID standard, which is shown by a gold star on their driver’s license or state-issued photo identification card.

She claims that the REAL ID Act was enacted by Congress in 2005.

When it came to producing state identification cards or driver’s licenses, the researchers discovered that each state had its own set of security rules, according to Benson.

Here are some frequently asked questions about REAL ID from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security

People will not be permitted to visit military sites, nuclear power plants, and some other government institutions, according to Benson, unless they have a REAL ID-compliant identity card. Residents of Michigan must schedule an appointment with a Secretary of State branch office in order to get identification that complies with federal regulations. According to Benson, “bring in your birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport, or any other proof that demonstrates your lawful status in the nation.” As a last point of clarification, if your name differs from any of those, you must submit official paperwork for each time your name has changed.” According to Benson, upgrading to a REAL ID-compliant card is completely free if you obtain one as part of your regular license or ID card renewal.

In addition, a REAL ID is not necessary to operate a motor vehicle in Michigan.

Pat Batcheller of WDET says: What exactly is REAL ID? Jocelyn Benson, United States Secretary of State: It is a law that was passed in the wake of the terrorist events on September 11, 2001. The United States Congress desired to tighten the laws governing the use of identification at U.S. airports. They discovered that each state has its own set of security requirements for the issuance of state identification cards or driver’s licenses. Some of them were even poor enough to allow for unauthorized copying or alteration.

Nonetheless, every single driver’s license and identification card must now have a gold star on it to indicate that it conforms with these new federal security criteria in order to be used to board a flight or access a government building.

Make an appointment with a branch office of the Secretary of State.

It’s necessary to bring your birth certificate or a valid United States passport (or any other proof proving your legal status in the nation) to the interview.

It is possible to be seen right away if you bring in all of your documentation and schedule an appointment to have your driver’s license or state ID card upgraded in order to comply with the new federal security criteria.

Is the REAL ID still required if I hold a valid United States passport?

Either of these options will continue to be sufficient for domestic flights.

Additionally, you are not need to go through this process if you do not intend to travel with your driver’s license or if you do not want to legally drive in Michigan.

You will be required to bring in official documentation for every time your name has changed, such as marriage licenses or court orders, if the name on your birth certificate or passport differs from the name on your birth certificate or passport.

It’s critical to get your identification and name verified at all times. It’s a little more complicated than that. If your passport has already been changed with your new name, you may just bring that in and it will suffice.
