  3. Prior to visiting the MDOT MVA, you must have your Social Security number changed with the Social Security Administration.

To Renew Online or by MVA’s Self Service Kiosk

If your renewal notification shows that you are qualified, you should proceed to the online renewal process. All Maryland drivers who are qualified to renew their licenses online are also eligible to renew their licenses at an MDOT MVA Self-Serve Kiosk, according to the MDOT. Driving tests for drivers over the age of 40 must be completed online and submitted to the Department of Transportation by an Authorized Online Vision Certification Provider. When renewing, the eyesight certification must be completed within 24 months of the last renewal.

In the event that you are not serving in the military but are out of the state and are unable to return before your license expires, you may be eligible to receive a temporary license or renew your license while out of the state.

Veteran Designation:

Depending on your state’s laws, you may be able to get a special designation for your driver’s license that indicates that you are a United States military veteran. There is no charge for the designation; for further information, please see the link below.

Fees:

Non-commercial driver’s licenses are renewed for a period of 5 to 8 years by the Maryland MDOT MVA.
