In 2016, the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) began distributing driver licenses, instruction permits, and identity cards with new designs. This design was revised in May 2020 in order to make it simpler to read on mobile devices. New features and an altogether new format are included in the card design. Laser-engraved information in grayscale, as well as a new card material, are among the highlights of the new card design. All valid driving licenses, instruction permits, and identity cards with the previous design are still valid and can be used until their expiration dates.

What You Need To Know

  • Mount Sneffels is depicted on the face of the card in the form of a mountain picture. This mountain, which is located in the San Juan Mountain Range west of Ouray and north of Telluride, rises to 14,158 feet in elevation, making it the 27th highest mountain in Colorado. Current cards will be valid until they reach the end of their expiration period. There will be no change in the charge for a document as a result of this new design. All of the information on the card will be laser-engraved, and the primary photo will be grayscaled
  • However, the secondary photo will be color. Individuals will receive a foldable temporary card instead of the traditional temporary card when they obtain temporary papers in the office. The star at the upper right of the card signifies that your document is a legitimate government-issued identification card. The ability to utilize it to enter government facilities as well as for air travel is provided. More information about the REAL ID Act may be found here. The new cards will continue to facilitate organ and tissue donation while also including military or veteran identification information. When a document is issued pursuant to the Colorado Road and Community Safety Act (CO-RCSA), a black box will be included that indicates, “This document is not valid for federal identification, voting, or public benefit purposes.”

What are the Driver’s License Classifications in Colorado?

Here is an overview of the numerous types of driver’s license classes available in Colorado, to assist you in making sense of them.

Class A

Class A licenses are used for commercial driving, and they are the most common type of license (CDL). The combination of vehicles must have a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,000 pounds or more, and the towed vehicle must have an additional GCWR of more than 10,000 pounds to be eligible for this privilege. There are many different types of combination vehicles available, including semi-trucks, trailer trucks, tractors, and tractor-trailer buses. You’ll be able to drive cars that fall into the B and C categories as well as those that fall into the Class A category with this license.

Class B

A class ‘B’ CDL is another type of CDL that allows you to drive vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) higher than or equal to 26,000 pounds, provided that the vehicle has a towing capability of 10,000 pounds. What is the distinction between Class A and Class B? Class A is for the operation of a group of vehicles (trailer trucks), whereas Class B is for the operation of a single vehicle (garbage truck). Buses, cement mixers, straight trucks, dump trucks, and other similar vehicles are examples of Class B vehicles.

Class C

A class ‘C’ CDL is another type of CDL that allows you to drive vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of less than 26,001 pounds. Furthermore, its towing capacity should be less than 10,000 GCWR. There are no restrictions on the type of two-axle vehicle that may be driven with this CDL license category.

It is the lowest CDL license category that permits license holders to drive any two-axle vehicle that fits the conditions we’ve outlined. It is important to note that a vehicle meant for passenger transportation is only considered commercial if it can transport more than 16 passengers at a time.

Class M

A class M motorcycle license permits the holder to operate a motorbike with two or three wheels. A basic driver’s license (Class R) is adequate for this category, which excludes motorcycles with engines less than 50cc, electric scooters, and bikes with a top speed of 40mph.

Class R

A class R license is what you would regard to be a’standard’ license, and it is utilized by the vast majority of the people. This license permits you to operate any vehicle or scooter that does not fit into one of the categories stated before. This would comprise vehicles such as family cars, sedans, SUVs, Hatchbacks, and other vehicles of a similar design and function.

Types of Permits and Licenses

The numerous steps involved in acquiring a driver’s license might appear to be overwhelming at times. Let’s take it step by step!

For persons who are learning to drive, a permit provides them with limited driving privileges. As a result of your age, the training that will be necessary to graduate to a license will be as follows:

If the individual does not have a valid license, they can nominate a substitute to supervise in their place until they obtain one. Alternatively, they can assign substitute supervisors for regular driving, but these hours will not be recorded in your practice driving log.

Colorado Minor Driver’s License (Age 16-21)

A minor license permits you to drive, but only under specified conditions:

  • For the first six months, no passengers under the age of 21 are permitted, unless accompanied by a parent or other licensed adult driver over the age of 21. For the next six months, you can bring one passenger under the age of 21 along with you. After that, the limitation is abolished
  • Nevertheless, during the first year, no driving between the hours of midnight and 5 a.m. is permitted unless you are driving with an adult age 21 or older in the passenger seat alongside you. A declaration from work or school certifying that doing so is required for your commute may also be accepted as proof of eligibility for an exemption.
  • Curfews are enforced in some cities and counties in addition to the state minimum. Check with your local government to ensure that you are adhering to all of the rules and regulations.
  • Drivers under the age of 18 are not permitted to use cell phones, including hands-free ones, while driving, with the exception of calling emergency assistance. Zero Tolerance: If you have even a trace of alcohol in your system while driving, you will be arrested and prosecuted.

If you turn 21 before your minor license expires, you will have 20 days to renew it. You will have the opportunity to upgrade to an unrestricted license during this period.

Unrestricted Colorado Driver’s License (Age 21+)

Once you reach the age of 21, you can apply for a Colorado driver’s license with no restrictions. Colorado Drivers License Renewal Information

If you are over the age of twenty-one (21) in the Centennial State, your driver’s license will expire every five (5) years. If you were given your license when you were under the age of twenty-one, it will expire twenty (20) days after you reach the age of twenty-one.

The expiry date will always occur on the same day as your birthday (if you are older than 21). If you are unsure about your license’s expiration date, check your physical license, which will always display the date.

Renewal Notice

The Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles (CO DMV) may mail you a renewal reminder. However, you are not needed to get this letter in order to renew your membership, so don’t be concerned if you do not. Possible reasons for not receiving one include that the Department of Motor Vehicles is not currently mailing out notices to drivers. However, in order to ensure that relevant messages are sent to you in the future, please ensure that your most recent address is on file. Changes of address in Colorado must be reported to the DMV as soon as possible.

When To Renew

As long as you are twenty-two (22) years or older, there are no restrictions on when you may renew your driver’s license in the state of Colorado. You may choose from any of the available renewal options as soon as you like, at your discretion. The sole exemption is for drivers under the age of majority who do not possess an adult license (under 21). In such situation, you will have to wait until you reach the age of 21 before you can renew your license. Because you have been given plenty preparation time, there should be no reason for you to let your license lapse.

Expired Colorado License

Licenses that have expired should never be used to operate a motor vehicle. If you are pulled over by the police, you will be issued a ticket by the officer. The possession of an expired license will also have significant ramifications upon re-certification. For example, if you allow your license to expire for more than one (1) year, you will only be able to renew it in person since you will be forced to retake both the knowledge test and the road test. If you have thrown or misplaced your expired license, you will be required to provide the same documentation as a new application.

After satisfying the requirements, you must apply to have your license reinstated.

There are certain DMV offices that are specifically set up to help you get your license back if your license was suspended for reasons such as unpaid tickets, child support issues, or the accumulation of points.

If you compare prices from a number of different insurance companies, you are sure to find savings.
