Avoid International License Scams

In order to suggest driving rights, individuals or organizations utilize the Internet to offer papers such as “International Driver Licenses” and “International Driving Permits,” which are referred to as “International Driving Permits.” The Registrar does not recognize any document that is designated as a ‘International Driver License,’ a ‘International Driving Permit,’ or any other document that purports to grant driving rights to the bearer.

Besides granting its possessor the authority to operate specific cars, the driver’s license also serves as a main identification document, which is especially important in countries that do not have a national identity card program. Because of the importance of a driver’s license document, it is critical that it is kept safe and secure. The ISO/IEC 18013 standard (the latest version of which was released in 2018) has been designed to describe the structure for a secure credit card-format document in order to achieve this goal.

  1. It also establishes a uniform structure for the first data collection, which is important (IS0 18013-1).

Enhanced Driver’s Licenses

In the United States and Canada, enhanced driver’s licenses, also known as EDLs, are driving licenses and identification cards that have an embedded RFID chip. They are issued by some states and provinces to make it easier and faster for people to enter the United States by land and sea from neighboring countries. They serve as identification and citizenship evidence, and they are only granted when a secure registration process has been completed. With contactless terminals installed in border inspection stations, it is possible to read the unique identification number of an EDL from a distance of up to 10 meters away.

From safe enrollment to license issuance and document verification, Marquis ID Systems (MIDS), a Thales business established in Fort Wayne (Indiana), has created solutions for Departments of Motor Vehicles that range from secure enrollment to license issuance and document verification.

Digital Driver’s License

Many government organizations in charge of driver licensing and identity credentials are now researching the possibility of creating a digital version of their jurisdiction’s driver’s license that may be used for a variety of identification reasons and be accessed through mobile devices. These digital driver’s licenses, also known as mobile driver’s licenses, provide more convenience to residents while also opening up new, more secure prospects for transactions that require some sort of identity, such as credit card purchases.

Organizations such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), as well as governments and organizations such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administration (CCMTA), and security/technology businesses such as Thales, are all working to define industry standards.

These standards go beyond the idea of just maintaining a digital picture of a driver’s license and integrate various degrees of security, validation, and relevant applications in addition to the basic concept.

In addition to user-friendliness, Thales mobile driver’s license solutions take into account the local driver’s license schemes and practices (such as those used by police and other law enforcement agencies as well as retail businesses and other service providers.), and they provide the highest level of security in the storage of credentials, the transmission of data, and the verification of those credentials.

In North America, Marquis ID Systems (MIDS), a Thales Company, produced solutions for Departments of Motor Vehicles that ranged from secure enrollment through issuance and document verification, among other things.

Ways to Renew

Every driver receives a courtesy renewal letter in the mail roughly eight to ten weeks before their license expires, depending on where they live. BE SURE TO READ THE RENEWAL NOTICE CAREFULLY. There are three primary methods for renewing a driver’s license, each of which will be outlined in detail on your renewal notification.

  • It is possible to renew by mail or online and obtain an updated license that retains your current photo
  • If you do not have a valid photo license at the time of renewal, you may apply for one. Depending on your license type, your renewal notification may instruct you to visit your local driver services facility to get a new image taken for your license. (See the NOTES section below.)
  • Persons 60 years of age or older who have a non-photo driver license that was granted on or before December 31, 2012, will be able to keep their non-photo driver license as of January 1, 2013. Applicants who reach the age of 60 on or after January 1, 2013 will no longer be eligible for a non-photo driving license based solely on their age. (See NOTE 3 for further information.) IMPORTANT: Effective January 1, 2012, a non-photo driver’s license will no longer be accepted as identification for the purpose of voting under Tennessee law.

Even if you did not receive a notification of renewal, you may just present your current license to any driver service center to have it renewed. It is not essential to have received a renewal notification in order for you to be eligible to renew your license. IMPORTANT NOTE 1: Drivers who have a Class A, B, or C Commercial Driver License (CDL) are required to attend in person for the renewal of their CDL license. At the time of renewal, CDL holders must additionally present a copy of their current and valid DOT medical card.

At the time of renewal, you must present updated documents demonstrating your current legal presence in the United States as well as the length of your approved stay in the country.

NOTE 3: If you plan to travel, you may want to consider getting a picture license to help you with the necessary credentialing to board a commercial airplane, passenger rail service such as Amtrak, or cruise ship, among other things.

Military Personnel

  1. For the purposes of this section, a person who has a valid Tennessee driver’s license and is serving in the United States Armed Forces is considered to be in the United States Armed Forces.

It is possible for military members to have a “Code 30” placed on their driver’s license while on active duty (which will indicate the license does not expire). It is not necessary to relinquish, cancel, revoke, or suspend a license that has a “Code 30” to keep it valid. Military personnel who wish to have this code added must provide proper identification as well as the necessary military documentation to a driver service center and pay the applicable costs in person or by mail. Renewals and duplicates can also be done over the mail if the necessary paperwork and money are submitted.

Individuals who serve in the National Guard or who are family members of military troops are ineligible for this benefit.

Please keep in mind that deployment at Fort Campbell Army Base is considered a reassignment back to the state of Tennessee. Fort Campbell Army Base is located in the states of Tennessee and Kentucky and serves as a joint military installation.
