Registration renewals conducted over the Internet or at emission inspection stations are delivered to the vehicle’s registered owner’s address. Motor vehicle property tax invoices for cars that have been registered are mailed to you by your local tax appraiser. Tax bills are payable in two installments: January and July. Changing your mailing address increases the likelihood of not receiving your motor vehicle tax bill in a timely way, even if you have submitted a forwarding order with the post office. For example, if you move after or on October 1st (of any year), your motor vehicle tax bill will be issued by the tax assessor who served you at your previous home.

It’s important to double-check with the Tax Collectors in both your previous and new towns if you didn’t get an invoice.

If you do not pay your motor vehicle tax payment on time, you may lose your ability to register your car.

See the article on how to cancel a registration for more details.
