What to Bring

When the REAL ID Act of the United States Department of Homeland Security went into force across the country in 2008, it mandated stricter criteria for the issuing of driver’s licenses and identity cards. The state of Florida began issuing REAL ID-compliant identification cards on January 1, 2010. REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses and identification cards are identified by a star in the top right corner of the card, which indicates that the card has been updated. Residents renewing or receiving a new driver license or identification card must meet certain paperwork criteria under the REAL ID Act, which was passed in 2005.

Customers must come to an office with the necessary documentation if they fall into one of the following categories:

  • The applicant is submitting an application for their first driver license or identification card
  • Their current credential is about to expire
  • Their current driver license or identification card does not have a star in the upper corner
  • Or they have legally changed their name since their last issuance (e.g., marriage, divorce, or court order)
  • The name(s) on their marriage certificate(s) or court order(s) must reflect the process by which their birth name was changed to their present name. If their name has changed more than once and the document they submit displays both their current name and their birth name, they simply need to provide the final name change paperwork
  • Otherwise, they must bring both documents. It will be necessary for them to present all documentation demonstrating how their name changed from their birth name to their current name if the final marriage certificate does not include both names.

As a reminder, under the REAL ID Act, after a consumer has provided the necessary identification papers, they will only be needed to do so again if their information changes (e.g., name, residential address). When it comes to identification at airports, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will only recognize driver licenses and identity cards that have a star in the top right corner after May 3, 2023. Individuals attempting to get entry to military bases and the majority of federal institutions must produce identification that complies with the REAL ID Act.

Please keep in mind that information on the REAL ID needed papers may be accessed by selecting the appropriate citizenship status from the drop-down menu below.

The best method of renewal for you?

Each strategy has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. We’ll go through each of them in detail in their own parts. Here’s an example table to illustrate:

Method Online In Person Via mail
How? Complete theOnline form Visit your localFLHSMV office Send a letter to customer service
Pros Fastest method, available 24/7 Getting aReal ID, saving your online renewal Useful if you’re deployed
Cons Not available to everyone. You have to come during work hours Only available to military personnel

Here’s why you should consider renewing in person

When it comes to administrative tasks, everyone has had a negative experience. Many other reasons have been given, including standing in huge queues, needing to take a day off work, being refused because one document is missing, and so on. However, there are genuine reasons to employ this strategy, including the following:

  • REAL ID—Beginning in October 2020, standards licenses will no longer be accepted for boarding domestic flights within the United States or entering federal offices. You will be needed to have a REAL ID in the future, which can only be obtained in person
  • And Keep a copy of your online renewal —You may only renew your license online once every two years. It is not possible to renew a license online this time if you have previously renewed it by mail or over the phone
  • Nevertheless, you may renew it by phone this time.
  • This is the sole option available to non-citizens of the United States, as well as individuals who have legally changed their name or residence since their prior license was granted. These individuals will be required to present documentation demonstrating their legal status or modifications
  • If your license has been expired for more than a year, you will be forced to undergo a new series of examinations, and you will only be able to renew it in person.

Those who are not citizens of the United States, or who have legally changed their name or residence since their last license was granted, can only use this approach. Documentation of their legal status or modifications will be required of these individuals. It is only possible to renew your license in person if your license has been expired for more than a year, since you will be forced to retake a new series of exams.

Renewing your FL license online

Non-citizens of the United States, as well as individuals who have legally changed their name or residence after their prior license was granted, must use this approach. These individuals will be required to present documentation demonstrating their legal status or modifications. If your license has been expired for more than a year, you will be forced to undergo a new series of examinations, and you will only be able to renew it in person;

  1. Your prior renewal must have taken place in person
  2. Otherwise, You are a citizen or permanent resident of the United States
  3. You’re renewing an ordinary license rather than a commercial driver’s license
  4. No traffic infractions have been reported to the authorities by you. Your driving privileges have not been suspended. You were not late for a court appearance because of traffic infractions

If you violate any of these restrictions, the only alternative available to you is to renew your license in person.

Renewing your license through the mail (military personnel only)

If you are serving on active military service outside of Florida, you can seek a renewal online if you satisfy all of the conditions for online renewal. In any other case, you and your immediate family can apply for a free temporary military extension card through the Department of Defense.

This form of renewal will allow you to keep your license until 90 days after you have been discharged, until you receive a new license, or until you return to Florida permanently. Please complete the attached form and submit it in one of three ways: by mail, fax, or electronic mail.

  • Customer Service Center, 2900 Apalachee Pkwy, MS 99, Tallahassee, FL 32399
  • Through e-mail at [email protected]
  • Via fax at (850) 617-3985
  • Or in person at the Customer Service Center.

Can I renew my license if it’s suspended?

Whatever time your driving privileges have been suspended or revoked for any reason, you must have them restored before you are eligible to renew your permit. Depending on what form of suspension you received, the procedure will differ, and once complete, you will be able to renew your license only in person. After your suspension has been removed, DoNotPay may assist you in scheduling a quick renewal appointment.

How can non-citizens renew their licenses?

Non-citizens of the United States will be required to renew their licenses in person. In addition to the standard renewal requirements, you must supply documentation showing your legal status in the United States. It is possible to have a variety of papers, such as a Green Card, a valid Visa, a Notice of Action, and so on.

My license was lost/stolen/damaged, what should I do?

Along with your standard renewal documentation, you will be required to provide a document verifying your legal status in the United States of America. Document Requirements for FL Driver License or ID

Every individual who intends to receive a driving license or identification card in the state of Florida is needed to present particular papers to confirm their citizenship/immigrant status as well as their identify. Florida’s standards are in accordance with federal laws established by the Department of Homeland Security’s Real ID Act, which was intended to increase security while also assisting in the reduction of identity theft.

Am I Real ID Compliant?

As of January 1, 2010, if you have submitted identity papers and have been awarded a license out of an office, you should be in compliance with Real ID requirements. Looking at your most recent driver’s license or identity card and seeing if it has a gold star in the top right corner next to the image of the state of Florida is the most straightforward approach to determine whether or not you are in compliance with Real ID. In the event that you currently have a Real ID compliant card, you will not be required to produce any additional documentation unless you are making a modification to the information (such as name, address, or immigration status) on your current card.

Not Real ID Compliant?
