Virginia residents will need a REAL ID to board an airplane starting October 2020

RICHMOND, VA (AP) – A star on your driver’s license indicates that you are a safe driver. In order to board a flight or enter a secure federal facility, Virginia residents will be required to have a star on their driver’s license, indicating that it is a REAL ID-compliant credential, or they will be required to present another form of approved identification to board their flight or enter the facility. The REAL ID driver’s licenses and identity cards issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia contain a little star in the upper right corner to signify that they comply with new federal laws that establish basic security standards for identification cards.

  1. When applying for a new driver’s license at a Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles office, people have the choice of upgrading to a REAL ID-compliant license or sticking with a normal driver’s license, depending on their preferences.
  2. A regular credential, on the other hand, will not be accepted for boarding an aircraft or accessing secure government sites, such as military bases and some federal offices, if the star is not present.
  3. Individuals who wish to obtain a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license will need to visit in person at their local Virginia DMV and provide appropriate documentation proving their citizenship in the United States and their residence in Virginia.
  4. A list of the most frequently used papers is available on the internet.
  5. A coordinated federal initiative to improve the dependability and accuracy of driver’s licenses and identity cards is known as REAL ID.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has installed new signs at airports across the country to remind travelers that REAL ID-compliant licenses or other acceptable forms of identification, such as a valid passport, federal government PIV card, or United States military ID, will be required for air travel beginning on October 1, 2020.

This is critical since it will prevent people from traveling.

Visit the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles website for further information and specifics on how to acquire a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identity card in the state of Virginia.

The Transportation Security Administration also has a one-minute video that gives information on traveling with a REAL ID-compliant license.

In order to board an aircraft or visit a secure federal facility, Virginia citizens will be required to have a star on their driver’s license, indicating that it is a REAL ID-compliant credential, or they will be required to provide another form of recognized identification. It is shown by a little star in the top right corner of the REAL ID driver’s licenses and identity cards issued by the state of Virginia that they comply with new federal laws establishing basic security standards.

When renewing their driver’s license at a Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles office, people have the choice of upgrading to a REAL ID-compliant license or remaining with a normal driver’s license.

Have you switched to the new Real ID? You might want to do that soon

REAL ID compatible driver’s licenses are similar in appearance to conventional licenses, with the exception of a star in the top right corner. (Photo courtesy of the Virginia DMV/WYDaily) It’s a new year, which for many Virginians means it’s time to get a new driver’s license. Those who have not yet transitioned to Virginia’s new Real ID program will have some challenges beginning in October while flying domestically or accessing protected government buildings. As described on the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles’ website, the new Real ID will look identical to the conventional Virginia license, but it will include a black star in the corner to indicate that it is consistent with Real ID requirements, rather than a white star.

  • Since then, according to Brubaker, it has been a lengthy process including a number of procedures in order to eventually put Virginia on the route to providing Real ID licenses.
  • Otherwise, the tourist will be required to bring an other form of federally approved identification, such as a passport, with them on their trip.
  • Brubaker stated that people have the option of having or not having a Real ID card.
  • Brubaker, on the other hand, advises it since, once a citizen has a Real ID, they will no longer be concerned about travel concerns.
  • Drive
  • Cast your ballot or register to vote
  • Verify your identity with financial institutions, retail outlets, and utility companies. Obtaining and utilizing government assistance programs
  • Use medical or life-saving services to save your life

The new ID card is extremely identical in appearance to the old ID cards, with the exception of the black star that serves as a distinguishing feature. According to Brubaker, the new symbol is not related with any of the security technologies contained within the card. She went on to say that the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles upgraded their security procedures on licenses in 2009, and that citizens will note that the star is the sole difference. For Virginia residents to switch to the Real ID system, they must visit their local DMV and bring either an unexpired United States passport or birth certificate, as well as either a Social Security card or W-2 form that displays the applicant’s full Social Security number, to their nearest DMV location.

  • Residents who do not have an expired driver’s license will be required to pay a $20 replacement cost in addition to the $10 Real ID price.
  • Brubaker stated that if people come to the DMV with the necessary paperwork, the procedure is rather straightforward.
  • A mobile DMV station will be available throughout the year, providing access to people who may not have convenient access to their DMV site.
  • Brubaker, on the other hand, suggests that locals visit the DMV during the month of January since it is a quiet month and they will be able to finish the procedure more quickly.
  • “We don’t want them to be surprised.” “We want individuals to look at the website and know what papers to bring so that they can make it simpler on themselves,” said the group.

Virginia Driver’s License or State ID Card

Aside from the black star, the new ID card is virtually identical to the previous one, with the exception of the black star being the only distinguishing feature. According to Brubaker, the new symbol is not related with any of the security technologies included within the credit card. Residents would notice only one difference, she continued, because the Virginia DMV changed its security procedures on licenses in 2009, and they will see only the star on their licenses. For Virginia residents to switch to the Real ID system, they must visit their local DMV and bring either an unexpired United States passport or birth certificate, as well as either a Social Security card or W-2 form that displays the applicant’s full Social Security number, to the location of their choosing.

  • Those who do not have a valid driver’s license will be required to pay a $20 replacement cost on top of the $10 Real ID price.
  • Brubaker stated that if folks come to the DMV with the right paperwork, the procedure is rather straightforward.
  • In order to accommodate people who may not have convenient access to their DMV facility, mobile DMV stations will be set up at libraries and government buildings throughout the year to give service.
  • ‘We simply want folks to come prepared,’ she added.

Virginians have less than a year to get REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses

Beginning on October 1, 2020, Virginia residents who travel throughout the country or who routinely visit secure federal sites will be required to present this new form of identification to authorities. Photo courtesy of the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles Local people will have just under 11 months to determine whether or not they want to trade in their existing license for one that has a black star in the upper right corner when the new rules take effect in the autumn of next year. However, while the move is set to take effect on October 1, 2020, the news is not new, since the United States Congress passed the Real ID Act in 2005 in order to improve security standards and prevent terrorism across the country.

  1. Because of the impending deadline, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles is asking citizens to visit their local DMV well in advance of the Oct.
  2. Subscribe to our biweekly newsletter to receive other travel-related articles.
  3. “We’re also attempting to spread the information to as many Virginians as we possibly can.” In Virginia, a REAL ID is not required.
  4. The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) had issued over 700,000 REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses as of last month, but there are still millions of citizens who need to make the switch before the autumn of 2020 deadline.

Are you interested in obtaining this type of identification as soon as possible? According to Brubaker, the following items should be brought with you to your local DMV office:

  • To verify both identification and legal presence, a birth certificate or a valid passport is required. Identification number (social security number)
  • Two evidence of Virginia residency (a current, valid driver’s license, a Virginia voter registration card, and a current rental agreement)

Also keep in mind that there is a one-time $10 cost in addition to the usual expenses for obtaining a new driver’s license. Visit the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles website for additional information about REAL ID-compliant licenses.
