License and Renewal Fees

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) makes it easy for you to remember when your driver’s license or identity card expires. To qualify for the program, all driver’s licenses must expire in a calendar year that is divisible by five years after the date on which you were issued the license (for example, age 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, etc.). Your license is valid for five (5) years if you participate in this program. However, before you can begin the five-year cycle, the DMV may need to introduce you to the program in stages over several months.

  • When your driver’s license expires, for example, if you are or will be 34 in the year in which your license expires, you will be awarded a six-year license that will expire when you are 40 years old.
  • For driver’s licenses that expire on the anniversary of the licensee’s 18th or 21st birthday, a 30-day grace period will be granted in order to allow the bearer to get the proper color license.
  • The fees for this renewal term may be more or lower depending on the number of years that the driver’s license will be valid for.
  • All driver’s license renewal costs will be calculated based on the number of years you will hold a driver’s license until your age is divisible by five (25, 30, 35, 40, etc.), at a rate of $5.00 per year plus.50 cents per year for each additional year.

Consider the following scenario: If you are 21 years old when you renew your driver’s license, the license will expire on your 25th birthday, and the renewal charge will be $20.50 ($5.00 x 4 + 0.50%).
