A California driver’s license (DL) is a piece of identification that grants you authorization to operate a motor vehicle in the state. It contains your genuine complete name, birthdate, postal address, signature (if applicable), photograph (if applicable), and physical description (if applicable). When operating a motor vehicle, you must have the card in your possession at all times. To operate a motor vehicle in California, you must have a valid driver’s license. Learn about the several types of DLs that are available, as well as the prerequisites for applying for one.
There is an application cost for new drivers’ licenses, renewals, and replacements.
There are two primary types of DLs: noncommercial and commercial, which are further divided into subcategories. There are several sub-categories of licenses available under the noncommercial category, each of which authorizes drivers to operate certain types of motor vehicles. California Driver Handbook, as well as the California Driver Handbook, provide further information on the categories and sub-types of licenses. Noncommercial DLs are classified into four categories:
- Basic DL (Class C): A regular vehicle or truck for personal use on California highways and highways in California
- Motorcycle (Class M1 or M2): A motorized vehicle with two wheels. How to obtain a motorbike license is explained in detail. The following conditions apply to a travel trailer or fifth wheel (Noncommercial Class A): a trailer coach with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 10,000 pounds (where the towing is not for pay)

- Permission to instruct
- Probationary license
- Regular license
- And permission to instruct
It is possible that some customers’ driving records contain more than one license. If they hold both an instruction permit and a license, or if they have just upgraded from a permit to a probationary or regular license, this is most likely the case. Check the license status in order to ascertain the validity of the license.
- “OTH” indicates that the license type has been superseded by another license type and is therefore no longer valid. The status “EXP” indicates that the item has expired and is no longer valid.
A person’s driver record may show that they have both a valid (VAL) permit and a valid license at the same time on occasion. Generally, if the classes and endorsements on the driver’s license and the permit are the same, you may conclude that the person is driving with a license rather than a permit. It is necessary to determine whether the items fall into distinct categories and have different endorsements in order to determine whether the individual is operating under the authority of a permit or a license.
It is reasonable to presume that they are driving under the authority of the permit and are subject to the limits of the permit if they only have a permit for that type of operation in their possession.
