WARNING: The Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) provides REAL ID compatible items (designated with an a) in compliance with the federal Real ID Act of 2005. Beginning on May 3, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security will require identification that is REAL ID compliant (or another acceptable form of identification, such as a passport) if you plan to fly within the United States, visit a military base, or visit other federal buildings. This is the new deadline for this Federal requirement.

Notifications printed on Wisconsin Driver Licenses and ID Cards that are required by state and/or federal law:

  • ASTAR The compliance symbol in the top right corner of the card shows that the card complies with the criteria of the FederalREAL IDAct.
  • A card marked NOT FOR FEDERAL PURPOSES implies that it does not meet the standards of the Federal REAL ID Act.
  • TEMPORARY IN NATURE represents the fact that the bearer of the license or identification card is a non-immigrant (Temporary Visitor) with legal status in the United States
  • This shows that the CDL license holder is a non-immigrant (Temporary Visitor) who has legal standing in the United States.

How are these cards more secure?

Starting in the Fall of 2015, sample under 21 cards will be available.

  • Detailed black and white photographs are laser etched onto a very high-quality polycarbonate card to create the cards. There are no layers between the photo and the solid card
  • The photo is completely merged. The process generates two high-definition, high-contrast pictures, making it far more difficult to produce a counterfeit of the card.

Who gets a new driver license/ID card?

  • All Wisconsin driver licenses and identification cards will be valid until the date on which they expire. Persons whose cards are about to expire will receive the regular notification to renew. The process does not alter at this point. There is no need to arrive early to pick up a new product

Wisconsin driver license and ID cards issued March 2012 to October 2015

  • Some cards issued between March 2012 and October 2015 will be valid until the end of 2023. From March 2012 until October 2015, sample cards were distributed.

Wisconsin driver license and ID cards issued September 2005 to 2012

  • Some cards issued between September 2005 and 2012 will be valid until the end of 2020. From September 2005 through 2012, sample cards were distributed.

Wisconsin will have three cards in circulation until older cards expire
