  • In situations when the card’s primary duty is to serve as a name badge for a conference or seminar, larger sizes are typically employed. Card sizes as small as 3.5 by 3.5 inches are frequently employed as key cards or stored value cards in single-purpose applications, such as office copying cards. Despite their small size, they may be used as identity tags that can be fastened to the key ring. Cardholders’ identification, such as those from grocery stores or gym memberships, and video rental cards, are typically no more than 2 inches long and 1 inch broad.

Thickness of the Card While ID cards are available in a range of thicknesses, the most common is 0.030 inches, which is the most common thickness for ID cards. This is equal to 30/1000 of an inch, or 30 mil, as it is more usually referred as. A 20-24 mil card is often used to create a card that seems regular but feels a little more flexible in the hand. The cards are 10 – 15 mm thick, making them nearly paper-like in appearance. Cards with a thickness more than 30 mil are still often used in some access control contexts, such as door entry and parking management.

This is due to the fact that larger cards (those with a thickness more than 30 mil) will not fit or will have trouble fitting into the majority of card reading equipment, payment terminals, and ATMs.
