Renewing Your License
After the first of the year 2016, Tennessee drivers’ licenses for anyone above the age of 21 will expire every eight years from the date of issuance. In this case, the “regular costs” are computed for an 8-year driver’s license and include the cost of the application. When your license expires, you will no longer be permitted to operate a car or motorbike and will be subject to the same penalties as if you had never obtained a license in the first place. Tennessee state law requires anybody who received a Tennessee driving license after January 1, 2001 to produce evidence proving that they are a citizen of the United States or a lawful permanent resident at the time of their initial renewal of their license.
For information on whether you are eligible and would want to renew your license using the Internet, please see our Online Services section.
Ways to Renew
Every driver receives a courtesy renewal letter in the mail roughly eight to ten weeks before their license expires, depending on where they live. BE SURE TO READ THE RENEWAL NOTICE CAREFULLY. There are three primary methods for renewing a driver’s license, each of which will be outlined in detail on your renewal notification.
- It is possible to renew by mail or online and obtain an updated license that retains your current photo
- If you do not have a valid photo license at the time of renewal, you may apply for one. Depending on your license type, your renewal notification may instruct you to visit your local driver services facility to get a new image taken for your license. (See the NOTES section below.)
- Persons 60 years of age or older who have a non-photo driver license that was granted on or before December 31, 2012, will be able to keep their non-photo driver license as of January 1, 2013. Applicants who reach the age of 60 on or after January 1, 2013 will no longer be eligible for a non-photo driving license based solely on their age. (See NOTE 3 for further information.) IMPORTANT: Effective January 1, 2012, a non-photo driver’s license will no longer be accepted as identification for the purpose of voting under Tennessee law.
Even if you did not receive a notification of renewal, you may just present your current license to any driver service center to have it renewed. It is not essential to have received a renewal notification in order for you to be eligible to renew your license. IMPORTANT NOTE 1: Drivers who have a Class A, B, or C Commercial Driver License (CDL) are required to attend in person for the renewal of their CDL license. At the time of renewal, CDL holders must additionally present a copy of their current and valid DOT medical card.
At the time of renewal, you must present updated documents demonstrating your current legal presence in the United States as well as the length of your approved stay in the country.
NOTE 3: If you plan to travel, you may want to consider getting a picture license to help you with the necessary credentialing to board a commercial airplane, passenger rail service such as Amtrak, or cruise ship, among other things.
If this occurs, you will need to visit the driver service facility nearest you in order to get a fresh image taken for your photo license.
As long as the following conditions are met by a person who owns a valid Tennessee license and is serving in the United States Armed Forces, the license will remain valid regardless of the indicated expiration date:
- The individual continues to be on active service
- Is stationed outside of the state of Tennessee
- And has not relinquished, canceled, or suspended his or her license.
It is possible for military members to have a “Code 30” placed on their driver’s license while on active duty (which will indicate the license does not expire). It is not necessary to relinquish, cancel, revoke, or suspend a license that has a “Code 30” to keep it valid. Military personnel who wish to have this code added must provide proper identification as well as the necessary military documentation to a driver service center and pay the applicable costs in person or by mail. Renewals and duplicates can also be done over the mail if the necessary paperwork and money are submitted.
Individuals who serve in the National Guard or who are family members of military troops are ineligible for this benefit.
Please keep in mind that deployment at Fort Campbell Army Base is considered a reassignment back to the state of Tennessee.
Code 30 Necessary Documentation
- A copy of military orders confirming active duty status and indicating that the service member is stationed outside the state of Tennessee
