Enhanced Driver’s License for International Travel

Important Passport processing processes are taking longer than usual as a result of Covid-19, and this is true for both standard and expedited services. Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) issued by the state provides travelers with not just a driving license, but also documentation of their identity and citizenship while traveling over state and federal boundaries in the United States of America. In accordance with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), this card was developed to enable travelers from select border states with a quick, but safe, means of entering and exiting the nation.

When combined with a REAL-ID, an EDL can be used for domestic flight travel inside the United States.

What does an Enhanced Driver’s License offer?

Important For both standard and expedited services, processing times for passports are longer than typical as a result of Covid-19. Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) issued by the state provides visitors with not only a driving license but also identification and citizenship verification while entering and crossing the United States border. In accordance with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), this card was developed to enable travelers from select border states with a quick, yet safe, means to enter and depart the United States.

As a REAL-ID card, an EDL is acceptable for use on domestic flights inside the United States (excluding international flights).

How to apply for Enhanced Driver’s License?

Depending on where you reside, you may be able to apply for an Enhanced Driver’s License. Residents of the following states are the only ones who can take use of it at the moment: Consider applying for a United States Passport Card if you plan to travel to other states and want the same level of convenience. If you fulfill the residence criteria, the process for applying for an EDL in most participating states is substantially identical to the process for applying for a conventional driver’s license:

  • If you have never held a driver’s license before, you must pass both the written knowledge exam and the driving skills exam before a license may be awarded. Individuals 18 and older are not compelled to take driver education, however it is highly encouraged that they do so. If you currently hold a valid driver’s license, you can apply for an EDL at the time of renewal or extension of your license’s expiration date. You must provide the relevant evidence, which may include a mix of Social Security cards, proof of identification, proof of US citizenship, and proof of presence in the United States. If you want to alter your name, you must provide legal and relevant documentation. On your driving record, you must not have any traffic offenses, license suspensions, revocations, or rejections that would prevent you from operating a motor vehicle legally.

It is important to note that in some areas, you may be needed to participate in a formal interview in order to acquire an EDL. The temporary operator’s permit or temporary upgraded ID will be granted to you once you have completed the application, had your biometrics and photographs taken, and signed the relevant declaration documents. This permit is solely good for identification purposes and is not authorized for border crossing.

Your improved license, which is valid for up to four years, should come in the mail within two to three weeks after placing your application. When it comes to the validity of your Enhanced License, it’s usually the same as the validity of your standard Driver’s license.

Minnesota citizens may now apply for an improved version of their driver’s license or identity card, which will allow them to re-enter the United States through land and water from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, or the Caribbean, among other countries. The enhanced driver’s license (EDL) and the enhanced identification card (EID), in addition to acting as a driver’s license or identity card, are two of the federally-approved border-crossing credentials necessary under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI).

Applications for an Enhanced Driver’s License or an Enhanced Identification Card are only accepted from Minnesota residents who are also citizens of the United States and are at least 16 years old.

What is the difference between an EDL and an EID?

  • From Canada, Mexico, and several Caribbean nations, an EDL/EID can be used as a cross-border travel document (in place of a passport) to re-enter the United States by land and water. According to the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), an EDL/EID serves as a means of identifying both identification and citizenship. These cards may be used for domestic air travel as well as for access to government institutions. Please see the Transportation Security Administration for a list of valid IDs
  • Using an EDL/EID for foreign aviation travel is not permitted. EDL/EID cards are embedded with a radio frequency identification (RFID) chip, which allows them to be read by a reader. Each EDL/EID card is allocated a unique number, which is stored on the RFID chip. It does not contain any biometric information (for example, fingerprints, face recognition, or other similar data)
  • Several states already provide EDL/EID services
  • Minnesotans may choose to obtain an EDL/EID, but they are not required to do so. An EDL/EID card must be addressed to the Minnesota residence address that appears on the card
  • Otherwise, the card will be returned to the sender.

What is an Enhanced Drivers License or EDL?

Some citizens of the United States and Canada have been eligible to get an Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) since 2013. Currently, EDLs are available in the states of Minnesota, Michigan, New York, Washington, and Vermont in the United States of America. Efforts are underway in Arizona, California, and Texas to put an EDL program into effect. EDLs are available in Canada in the provinces of British Columbia, Quebec, Manitoba, and Ontario, among other places. Quebec, on the other hand, decided to end the program in 2014 owing to a lack of interest.

What is an Enhanced Driver License?

An enhanced driver’s license, often known as an EDL, can be used as both a driver’s license and an identification card, which can be used to establish citizenship in certain situations. It is permissible to use an EDL for land or sea travel (but not for air travel) as the identification necessary to pass international borders between the United States and other countries such as Canada, Mexico, and several Caribbean islands.

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) allows citizens of the United States to enter the country by land or sea (but not by air) with simply an EDL as identification when traveling from the nations listed below:

  • Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Caribbean Netherlands, Cayman Islands, Curaçao, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Jamaica, Mexico, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sint Maarten, Turks and Caicos Islands
  • Turks and Caicos Islands

EDLs are important as documentation for American citizens who go on a cruise that departs from a port in the United States and returns to the same port at the conclusion of the trip. EDLs are described in detail by the Department of Homeland Security in terms of technology. Pros For people who live in states or provinces that provide EDLs, there are several advantages to acquiring an EDL that may be used for both land and maritime travel (not air). The advantages are as follows:

  • Lower cost than passports– A new passport costs $115, which is less expensive. In comparison to the cost of a passport, an EDL is significantly less expensive. Michigan’s EDL cost is $45 dollars. Minnesota:$15 $30 in New York City Vermont:$25 Washington:$35
  • Processors can move more quickly through border checkpoints since EDLs have an RFID microchip that transmits a radio frequency. When a person comes within a certain distance of the equipment at the Border Control, the equipment scans the information from the microchip and searches for the individual’s matching information in the database. Additionally, the EDL contains a Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) or barcode that may be scanned by a border control officer using a barcode reader as necessary
  • There are certain countries that do not accept EDLs and require passports to enter
  • When traveling by air, this is not a good idea. Because it is possible to “hack” an RFID chip in order to acquire access to a personal identifying code, there are privacy issues. This code serves merely as a one-time identifying number and does not include any personal information. There is a link between the code and the real personal information that is stored in a protected Homeland Security database. Additionally, theEDLs comes with a protective cover for the card, which prevents other people from receiving the radio signal.

Summary EDLs are useful for a variety of reasons and are less expensive than passports. EDLs are useful for particular sorts of travel, such as Caribbean cruises that depart from and return to an American port or numerous land crossings between the United States’ border with Canada or Mexico, among other things. You would be able to obtain an EDL from your local DMV location, which is indicated on this page.

Comments

Americans who travel by land or water to Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean must bring back an identification card that complies with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative in order to re-enter the country. While everyone traveling overseas by aviation must have a passport from the United States, passengers going by land and water have additional alternatives. Consequently, do you need to obtain an apassport book, a passport card, or an improved drivers license? The differences are summarized in the table below:

Type of ID Valid for International Air Travel? Domestic Air Travel? Land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean? Available in all 50 states? Price
US Passport Book ☑️ ☑️ ☑️ ☑️ $110 for adults, $80 for children
US Passport Card ☑️ ☑️ ☑️ $30 for adults, $15 for children
Enhanced Driver’s License ☑️ ☑️ ❌ (Only in Michigan, Minnesota, New York and Washington). Varies

Passport books are available from the federal government for all forms of travel. You can also obtain a passport card if you want to travel by land or water to Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean. It is possible to go to these places even if you do not have one of these types of passports. Select overseas locations within the Western Hemisphere are now accessible through the use of Enhanced Drivers Licenses, often known as EDLs, which are being offered by some states.

What is the Enhanced Drivers License?

Due to the presence of a radio frequency identification chip, which carries information on the individual to whom the EDL was given, it is more difficult to forge an Enhanced Drivers License than a standard driver’s license. As an illustration, the following is an example of the New York Enhanced Drivers License:

US Passports Vs Enhanced Driver’s Licenses

In addition to having a radio frequency identification chip that stores information on the individual who received an Enhanced Drivers License, they are more difficult to forge than a standard driver’s license. As an illustration of the New York Enhanced Drivers License, consider the following information:

About the REAL ID Act

Beginning on October 1, 2021, you will be required to provide a Real ID in order to board a domestic aircraft. REAL IDs include all US passports and Enhanced Driver’s Licenses, which are accepted worldwide. Even states that do not currently provide an Enhanced Driver’s license now have licenses that are REAL ID-compliant on the market.

But if it has been a while since you updated your license, your present driver’s license may not be up to date and hence ineligible. For additional information on the Real ID Act, please see this page.

Which States Offer the Enhanced Drivers License?

Currently, only five states provide EDLs: Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington. Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington. What should you do if you live in one of those states: obtain an EDL or a passport? Having an EDL will enable you to make brief travels across the border into Canada or Mexico, either by automobile or by boat. You should be aware, however, that an EDL cannot be used for travel to any country other than Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean countries that are part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, which includes the United States.

  1. Also keep in mind that all international plane travel necessitates the use of a passport book.
  2. As a result, it’s a good idea to have an apassport book with you.
  3. The Department of State advises travelers visiting Mexico that “the Mexican government may refuse to allow U.S.
  4. passport book or a valid U.S.
  5. However, if you plan on spending any significant amount of time in our northern (or southern) neighbor, it is recommended that you go with your passport.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Passport?

Currently, it takes around 2 months to obtain a passport if you submit your application directly to the Department of State and follow the standard processing procedures. After paying the additional $60 to have it expedited, you’ll still have to wait at least 3 weeks after paying the fee. An expediting service, such as a private passport expediting firm, may typically have your passport ready in as little as 24 hours. Consider utilizing our service to obtain your US passports as soon as possible!

Enhanced Drivers Licenses: What Are They?

State-issued enhanced drivers licenses (EDLs) serve as identification and evidence of citizenship in the United States. They are issued through a secure procedure and feature technology that makes travel more convenient. The documents serve as an inexpensive and simple option for tourists who wish to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean through a land or sea port of entry. They may also be used to obtain a permit to drive in the United States. In order to comply with travel regulations under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), which became effective on June 1, 2009, the Department has been working with states to improve their drivers licenses and identity papers.

Because they have the following features, enhanced drivers licenses make it simpler for nationals of the United States to cross the border into the country.

  • While approaching the border inspection booth, you should have a proximityRadio Frequency Identification (RFID)chip that will signal a secure system to pull up your biographic and biometric data for the CBP officer, as well as a Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) or barcode that the CBP officer can read electronically if RFID is not available.

The top 39 land ports of entry, which handle more than 95 percent of all land border crossings, are equipped with RFID technology, which helps to expedite travel for those who exhibit EDLs or one of the other RFID-enabled identification papers.

What is an Enhanced ID?

The Enhanced Driver License, which has been accessible to residents of New York state since 2008 and appears identical to a conventional driver’s license, is also available. An EDL, on the other hand, features a banner that reads “Enhanced,” as well as an image of the American flag in the bottom-right corner of the screen. When it comes to REAL ID requirements, an Enhanced ID is acceptable, and it will allow you to travel on any domestic aircraft as well as visit government facilities and military sites.

The EDL is an additional $30 fee on top of the standard transaction fees.

Four additional states, in addition to New York, provide improved driver’s licenses that are consistent with the REAL ID Act, including Washington, Michigan, Vermont, and Minnesota, among others.

Do Ihaveto get a REAL ID or Enhanced Driver’s License?

No. Standard driver’s licenses and non-driver identity cards are still valid for driving and identifying purposes in the United States and New York State, respectively. REAL ID and Enhanced Driver Licenses: Are TSA Agents As Confused As We Are?

I proudly presented my new ENHANCED driver’s license to a TSA agent at Newark International Airport with the comment that I was now prepared for October 2020 when the new rules requiring the presentation of a REAL ID license to board an airplane for a domestic flight go into effect, which I believe will be in October 2020. Normal driver’s license would no longer be accepted, and if you did not have the REAL ID license, you would be required to show a passport. Imagine my astonishment when the agent examined my license attentively and informed me that “this is not good; you will need to have it updated since it does not have the star in the upper right hand corner.” I responded politely that “I believe you are mistaken,” implying that they may simply not have implemented the necessary training to confirm that “Enhanced Driver licenses” are in fact superior to REAL ID licenses, as they are also acceptable identification and documentation for land and sea travel between the United States, Canada, and Mexico, as well as for international travel.

In response, the agent smiled and shrugged his shoulders. When I was returning from Florida to the New Jersey region, I had a very identical interaction with a TSA agent at Fort Lauderdale International Airport, which was almost exactly the same.

Getting my Enhanced Driver License (EDL)

In the wake of public declarations about the necessity for REAL ID, I went to the website of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, where very clear instructions offered me with the option of “Obtaining an Enhanced Driver License (EDL) or REAL ID.” This was the beginning of my ordeal. The following is an excerpt from the website’s frequently asked questions:

What is an Enhanced Driver License (EDL)?

An enhanced license (permit, or non-driver ID) issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) can be used to return to the United States by land or water from Canada, Mexico, and other countries in the Caribbean in lieu of a valid passport. A New York State Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) is compliant with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI).1However, it is not acceptable for air travel between these countries. We recommend that you check with your travel agent, cruise line, or the specific countries of destination to determine their travel document requirements. An Enhanced license, permit, or non-driver ID is Federal REAL ID compliant and is accepted to board a domestic flight (within the United States), enter military bases, and certain

Fee

An enhanced driver license (EDL) or an enhanced non-driver ID card (ENDID) costs an additional $30.00, which is added to the other fees associated with the driver license or non-driver ID transaction.I thought this would be a good deal for an additional $30.00.I scheduled an appointment, as instructed, and arrived with my U.S. passport, current driver’s license, birth certificate, recent bank statements and utility bills confirming my local address, and what I believed to be my original driver’s license In less than two weeks, I had received my social security card, had scheduled my appointment with the DMV, had successfully finished the application procedure, and had received my upgraded driver’s license.

TSA Website

I returned to the TSA website after my exchanges at the airports in Newark and Fort Lauderdale and discovered that, to my surprise, my understanding of the requirements and that of the New York DMV were correct, as stated under the heading “About Enhanced Driver’s Licenses” on the TSA website: “Michigan, Vermont, Minnesota, and New York State issue REAL ID and state-issued enhanced driver’s licenses, both of which are acceptable.

” Only improved driver’s licenses are issued by the state of Washington.

The use of these papers at airport security checkpoints will be permitted after REAL ID enforcement is implemented.”

Reaching Out To TSA

The TSA’s CONTACT facility allowed me to submit a message and a request under the heading of “Request for Information” since I was not going to sit back and let this happen. Listed below is the message that I forwarded to them: In the course of our travels, we’ve passed through TSA security at Newark International Airport EWR and Fort Lauderdale International Airport FLL, and none of the TSA agents appear to be aware that there is such a thing as a “Enhanced” driver license, which is just as good, if not better than a REAL ID license.

  1. Certainly, it is evident on the New York DMV website that the upgraded license is preferable, and I believe the indicator for it is a flag in the bottom right-hand corner.
  2. This might be a real source of concern for those of us who have worked hard to get a “Enhanced” driver’s license.
  3. I received a response within a few days, however it did not appear to address my concerns and instead appeared to be a prefabricated answer.

Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL)

US residents returning from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean or Bermuda must show a valid U.S. Passport, U.S. Passport Card, or an Enhanced Driver’s License, whether they are traveling by land or water to their home country (EDL). An EDL cannot be used for foreign flights because of the restrictions. For the most up-to-date information on travel document requirements, visit the United States Customs and Border Protection website. It is important to note that a temporary EDL will NOT be accepted for border crossing; thus, plan appropriately.

Additional information on identification requirements can be found on form VL-018 (see below).

Summer Travel May Require An Enhanced Driver License or a U.S. Passport

The possession of a New York State Driver’s License will no longer be sufficient for crossing the border and re-entering the United States if you intend on taking a road trip to Canada or Mexico, or even a cruise to Bermuda or the Caribbean this summer. A Driver License or a Non-Driver ID was once sufficient for travel to the surrounding nations of Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean for American citizens. This was no longer the case in recent years. In response to increased security at our nation’s borders, beginning on June 1, 2009, all Americans traveling to or returning from bordering countries will be required to present government-issued identification before entering or leaving the country.

  • It is now possible to enter the United States border by land or water using the EDL in a convenient and cost-effective manner.
  • In comparison to a passport, which takes around four weeks to process, an EDL takes approximately two weeks to complete.
  • An Enhanced Driver License or Non-Driver Identification Card can be obtained through your local Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • citizenship as well as two proofs of domicile in the state of New York.
  • Please see the website for a comprehensive list of papers that are acceptable.
  • For further information about applying for a passport in the United States, please see the Department of State’s Web site at.

Travel to Canada with Enhanced Driver’s License and DUI

It is possible to go to Canada without a passport if you have an Enhanced Identification Card (EIC) or an Enhanced Drivers License (EDL) from one of the following states: Washington, Minnesota, South Dakota, Michigan, New York, or Vermont. You will not be allowed to fly to Canada if you use an Enhanced Driver’s License as your only form of identification since it is only valid for land and maritime crossings. An Enhanced Driver’s License, often known as an EDL, enables citizens of the United States to travel to Canada for both pleasure and business purposes.

  • A DUI arrest or conviction on your record will almost always necessitate either Criminal Rehabilitation or a Temporary Resident Permit before you can enter Canada legally.
  • Therefore, even a DUI reduced to reckless driving or a civil DUI violation (such as DWAI in the State of New York) can result in an American being refused entry by Canadian border officers!
  • A Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) can be used to allow an American with a drunk driving conviction to enter Canada for a short period of time, whereas Rehabilitation is a permanent solution that is accessible five years after the sentence has been completed.
  • The FBI NCIC (National Crime Information Center) database is accessible to anybody crossing the Canadian border, and more than a dozen US states exchange DMV driving information with Canada as well.

Enhanced Driver License – Licensing Express

The date is April 28, 2021. Because the epidemic is preventing people from accessing licensing services across the United States, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is allowing more time to ensure that you have REAL ID-compliant identification. The REAL ID Act, which enhances identification requirements for air travel, will not be enforced until May 3, 2023, which is many years later than initially envisioned. Earlier this year, just after the COVID-19 outbreak began, the deadline was also postponed until further notice.

  • April 28, 2021 is the day on which the event takes place. Because the pandemic is preventing people from accessing licensing services across the United States, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is granting additional time to ensure that you have REAL ID-compliant identification before your license is suspended. In accordance with the REAL ID Act, which tightens identification requirements for air travel, enforcement will not begin until May 3, 2023, which is many years later than initially anticipated. Last year, just after the COVID-19 outbreak began, the deadline was likewise postponed. When the REAL ID Act takes effect, every air passenger who is 18 years of age or older will be required to provide a compliant ID in order to board a domestic aircraft or visit government facilities such as military installations. Both the enhanced driver license (EDL) and the enhanced ID card (EID) are types of identification that comply with REAL ID requirements in Washington state (EID). Only by visiting a driver license office will you be able to receive these. While some states allow walk-ins, Washington requires appointments for driver licensing offices. Those who want immediate assistance and are unable to obtain what they require through other means should schedule an appointment. Different types of REAL ID-compliant documents may be obtained more quickly and easily than others. Fortunately, there are several alternatives, and you may already possess everything you require. The enhanced driver license (EDL) and the enhanced ID card (EID) are the two types of identification available in Washington state that comply with REAL ID requirements (EID).

Driver license offices in Washington, on the other hand, are now only accessible by appointment.

It is possible that obtaining a different sort of REAL ID-compliant document will be more expedient and straightforward. There are several solutions available, and you may already have everything you require. All of the following are comply with REAL ID requirements:

With REAL ID still a year away, you have plenty of time — and options

1st of October, 2020 Are you concerned that your ID may soon be rejected at the airport? Rest easily and maintain your health. To make sure you’re ready for REAL ID, you have another year to prepare. It was decided to postpone until October 1, 2021, due to the pandemic that occurred in the previous year. This gives you extra time to make sure you have everything you need to board an airline or get entry to government institutions such as military bases, if necessary. The state of Washington offers two types of compliant identification: the enhanced driver license (EDL) and the improved ID card (EID).

It’s possible that you already have everything you need.

  • The following documents are required: United States passport
  • United States passport card
  • Foreign passport
  • Permanent resident card (green card)
  • U.S. military ID
  • Federally recognized, tribal-issued photo ID
  • Border crossing card
  • United States Citizenship and Immigration Services employment authorization card (I-766)
  • DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
  • HSPD-12 PIV card
  • Transportation worker identification credential
  • U.S. merchant mariner credential

In order to upgrade your normal Washington license or ID to an upgraded one, you may want to explore one of the methods listed above rather than immediately applying for a new one. EDLs and electronic identification cards (EIDs) can only be obtained by visiting a driver licensing office, and appointments – you’ll need one to get in — are difficult to come by. Because of social distance and other safety precautions in place, capacity at our 38 open locations around the state is approximately 50% at this time.

  • We make every effort to ensure that patients who require immediate attention are able to schedule an appointment.
  • Instead of upgrading to an EDL/EID until the health emergency has passed, you may find it easier to obtain a passport or other form of identification that complies with REAL ID requirements.
  • Residents having regular driver licenses and identification cards who intend to upgrade to an upgraded version in the future can do so for just the difference in cost per year ($4 per year).
  • Even when REAL ID becomes mandatory, your normal driver’s license or identification card will continue to be valid for driving inside the United States or using the train.
  • The REAL ID Act, approved by Congress in 2005, is intended to aid in the fight against terrorism and identity theft.

Upgrade or renew your driver license/ID now — or be prepared for a very long wait

The date is February 20, 2020. Beginning on October 1, ordinary Washington driver’s licenses and identification cards will no longer be acceptable for air travel when the REAL ID Act takes effect. Have you been thinking about getting an enhanced driver’s license or identification card? Hurry! Is your driver’s license or identification card likely to expire in the coming year? Renew your membership right away! Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do now. Do not. Do not. Wait. The reason for this is that the longer you put off addressing your licensing requirements, the longer you can expect to have to wait in line.

  1. By the end of summer, it might be just a matter of hours.
  2. Using a conventional Washington driver’s license or identification card for domestic air travel or entering federal facilities, like as military bases, will no longer be acceptable under the new legislation, known as the REAL ID Act.
  3. It is only by providing the proper documentation to a licensing office that these REAL ID-compliant forms of identification may be obtained.
  4. If you already have everything you need to fly and are only interested in renewing your ticket, you may be able to skip a trip and do it online.
  5. If an office visit is inevitable, you can check the current wait times online before you arrive to the office.
  6. Waiting periods might vary significantly depending on the office, the day, and even the time of day that you go to the dentist.
  7. A little forethought may save you a great deal of time.
  • The following days and times: Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday
  • Weekday mornings

The following are the busiest times:

  • During lunch hour
  • The first day back in the office following a holiday
  • Weekdays after 3 p.m., when the children have finished with their schoolwork

1 year left! Washington residents will need REAL ID-compliant identification to fly starting October 2020

1st of October, 2019 With the REAL ID enforcement deadline less than a year away, officials with the Washington State Department of Licensing, the Sea-Tac and Spokane international airports, and the Transportation Security Administration are urging residents of Washington to take action now to ensure that they will be ready to fly when the deadline arrives. Beginning on October 1, 2020, passengers 18 years of age and older will be required to provide a REAL ID-compliant form of identification in order to board a commercial aircraft.

After the 9/11 Commission published a proposal, it was implemented, which established baseline security criteria for state-issued driver licenses and identity cards.

Now is the time to make preparations and ensure that you are prepared for REAL ID regulations.

According to Teresa Berntsen, director of the DOL, “We want Washington people to be prepared, and this is a reminder that you have one year to review your identification document alternatives and select which one best suits your lifestyle.” “If you have one of the several REAL ID-compliant papers, such as Washington’s upgraded driver license or ID card, you may already have the travel ID you require.

We highly advise our people not to put off getting ready and to do so immediately.” At the TSA security checkpoint, travelers can provide any kind of identification that complies with the REAL ID Act.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) maintains a complete list of accepted types of identification. When boarding an airline or entering a secure government facility, a number of identification documents will be allowed, including the following:

  • Passport (U.S. or international)
  • U.S. passport card
  • Military identification
  • DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
  • And other documentation. Driver’s license with enhanced capabilities
  • Tribal Identification
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential
  • Tribal Identification Card

“The Transportation Security Administration recognizes more than driver licenses as a form of picture identification at the security checkpoint, so some travelers may already have an approved alternate form of ID,” said Chris Baden, Deputy Federal Security Director for Washington. Due to the impending federal enforcement of REAL ID regulations, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) advises state citizens to take a few minutes to consider what picture identification they will use for travel beginning Oct.

TSA personnel will no longer be able to provide entrance to the security checkpoint unless the traveler presents a REAL ID-compliant form of identification one year from today.

Some of the most often required documents for obtaining an EDL/EID include a certified birth certificate, a United States passport, or a military identification card.

Signs have been placed at airports around the country to alert the public that REAL ID enforcement will begin shortly.

“We are now collaborating with the Department of Labor and the Transportation Security Administration to educate the public about REAL ID in order to avoid unpleasant surprises when the program launches in October next year.” As the deadline approaches, the demand for improved licenses and identification cards will only grow.

According to Larry Krauter, CEO of Spokane International Airport, “we are working closely with our partners at the Department of Licenses and the Transportation Security Administration to ensure that Washington state residents are prepared for the full implementation of REAL ID as it relates to air travel.” “We want to make sure that the transition takes place smoothly over the next year so that there are no major interruptions to travel arrangements, particularly during the peak Christmas travel season in 2020.” Because of our significant growth, our screening checkpoints are overburdened even when everything is running smoothly, and we want to avoid passengers being turned away at the checkpoints because they do not have a REAL ID-compliant license or other acceptable alternative, such as a United States passport.” REAL ID is meant to increase the dependability and correctness of driver’s licenses and identity cards while also making it more difficult for terrorists and other criminals to elude discovery by using bogus documentation.

The Transportation Security Administration’s website has further information and commonly asked questions concerning REAL ID.

The use of an improved driver’s license or identification card is entirely elective and optional. Some of the most often required documents for obtaining an EDL/EID include a certified birth certificate, a United States passport, or a military identification card. On the Department of Labor’s website, you can find a complete list of the documents that can be used to get an improved driving license or identification card. The Department of Labor’s Director, Pat Kohler, stated that “if you know you will not be flying or if you already have a federally approved document such as a United States passport, passport card, or military identification, you do not need an enhanced driver license or ID card.” In the meanwhile, you have plenty of time to educate yourself on all of your alternatives and select the identity that is most appropriate for you.
