Driver’s Licenses

A California driver’s license (DL) is a piece of identification that grants you authorization to operate a motor vehicle in the state. It contains your genuine complete name, birthdate, postal address, signature (if applicable), photograph (if applicable), and physical description (if applicable). When operating a motor vehicle, you must have the card in your possession at all times. To operate a motor vehicle in California, you must have a valid driver’s license. Learn about the several types of DLs that are available, as well as the prerequisites for applying for one.

There is an application cost for new drivers’ licenses, renewals, and replacements.

License Types

There are two primary types of DLs: noncommercial and commercial, which are further divided into subcategories. There are several sub-categories of licenses available under the noncommercial category, each of which authorizes drivers to operate certain types of motor vehicles.

California Driver Handbook, as well as the California Driver Handbook, provide further information on the categories and sub-types of licenses. Noncommercial DLs are classified into four categories:

  • Basic DL (Class C): A regular vehicle or truck for personal use on California highways and highways in California
  • Motorcycle (Class M1 or M2): A motorized vehicle with two wheels. How to obtain a motorbike license is explained in detail. The following conditions apply to a travel trailer or fifth wheel (Noncommercial Class A): a trailer coach with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 10,000 pounds (where the towing is not for pay)
  • Housecar/motorhome (Noncommercial Class B): more than 40 feet in length but not greater than 45 feet in length (with endorsement)

All noncommercial driver’s licenses are available as either REAL ID compliant or federal non-compliant cards, depending on the situation. Once you have completed the criteria for your provisional instruction permit, you will be entitled to sit for your driving examination. You must do the following:

  • You must be between the ages of 16 and 18
  • You must have held your temporary instruction permit for a minimum of six months
  • And you must be a U.S. citizen. possess a certificate of completion in driver education You have successfully finished six hours of professional driving instruction. Have completed 50 hours of practice with an adult 25 years old or older who is in possession of a valid California driver’s license and who can confirm that you have completed the 50 hours of practice
  • At least 10 of the 50 practice hours should be spent driving at night.

To take your driving test, you must do the following:

  • Make an appointment for your driving test (driving tests are not given without an appointment). Make an appointment by calling 1-800-777-0133 during regular business hours
  • This number is available 24/7. Provide proof of financial responsibility (insurance) that meets or exceeds the standards of the State of California.

You must wait 14 days (not counting the day on which the exam was failed) before you may retake the driving test if you fail your driving test the first time. A cost of $7 is charged for retesting. You must reapply if you fail the driving exam three times. Once you pass the driving test, the DMV will offer you a temporary driver’s license (DL) until your new driver’s license arrives in the mail. The temporary driver’s license is valid for 60 days after it is issued. Within 3-4 weeks, you will receive your driving license in the mail.

To operate a motor vehicle in California, all citizens must have a valid California driver’s license.

Situation1: “I’ve never had a DL.”

In the event that you are above the age of 18 and have never held a driver’s license in any state or nation, you may be eligible for an instruction permit until you are ready to take your driving test. An instruction permit for provisional driving is only available to drivers under the age of eighteen. An instruction permission would be provided to anyone who is over the age of eighteen. Once you have completed the criteria for the instruction permit, you will be able to take the driving test to obtain your California driver’s license.

Situation2: “I have a DL issued by another state.”

If you already have a valid driver’s license from another state, follow these steps to apply for a California driver’s license:

  • If you already have a valid driver’s license from another state, here’s how to apply for a California license:
  • Identify yourself by providing your social security number (SSN). You must provide an appropriate identity document (original or certified copy) for either aFederal Non-CompliantDL/ID Card or aREAL ID CompliantDL/ID Card. Your current name must be the same as the name on your identification document (see the FAQs below for more information)
  • Present valid residence documentation (if you have never held a California driver’s license or identification card)
  • Pay the nonrefundable application cost (both the application and the fee are valid for 12 months). Have your thumbprint captured and scanned
  • Pass the eyesight test
  • Make an appointment to have your picture taken. Pass the knowledge test with flying colors (s). Each of the needed knowledge examinations can be passed three times if you do not fail the first two. If you fail the same exam three times, your application will be deemed invalid, and you will be required to reapply for the position in question. We do not conduct knowledge examinations within 30 minutes of the end of the day to ensure that enough time is available for testing.

Situation3: “I have a DL issued by another country.”

If you have a driver’s license from another nation, you should complete the application process outlined above under “I have a driver’s license from another state.” In order to receive an original California driver’s license, you’ll also need to pass a driving test. To take your driving test, you must do the following:

  • Make an appointment for your driving test (driving tests are not given without an appointment). Additionally, you can schedule an appointment by dialing 1-800-777-0133 during regular business hours: Provide proof of financial responsibility (insurance) that meets or exceeds the standards of the State of California.

A failed driving test necessitates the scheduling of an additional driving test on another day, as well as the payment of an additional $7 retest charge. You must reapply if you fail the driving exam three times.

Situation4: “I am ineligible for a DL, but can prove legal presence in California.”

The standard or REAL ID driving license or identification (DL/ID) card is available to any Californian who can demonstrate their present legal presence in the United States (U.S.) using one of the acceptable identity papers (original or certified copy). Every American, including citizens and permanent residents who are not citizens of the United States (Green Card holders), as well as those with temporary legal status, such as recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) or Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and holders of a valid student or employment visa, is included in this category.

legal presence document, and they will be eligible to receive a new card if they can provide documentation of an extension of their legal status in the United States.

The complete list of valid identification papers for aFederal Non-CompliantorREAL ID CompliantDL/ID card may be seen here. There are a variety of additional ways to demonstrate that you are lawfully present in the United States, including the following:

  • If you were born in the United States, you may be required to present a birth certificate, passport, or passport card issued by the United States. If you are an immigrant to the United States, you may be required to present a naturalization or citizenship document issued by the United States, or a Permanent Resident Card. It is permissible to produce a Temporary Resident Identification Card or other temporary resident paperwork if you are not an immigrant but are permitted to remain in the United States.

Your DL will be valid until the date indicated on the card indicates that it has expired. If you no longer have a legal presence in the United States, you can convert your DL to an AB 60 DL.

REAL ID compliant driver’s licenses are noncommercial or commercial licenses that also allow you to board domestic flights, enter military bases, and enter the majority of government buildings that are considered to be high-security facilities. All California REAL ID compatible driver’s licenses and identification cards have a California grizzly bear and a star in the upper-right corner of the face of the card. Individuals who apply for a driver’s license under AB 60 will be unable to apply for a REAL ID compatible card in the future.

Reading the New York State Driver’s Manual and completing practice tests are two ways to prepare for the exam. Find out how to obtain a learner’s permit. See the DMV’s location, procedures, and reservation information by clicking on the link below.

Step 3:Practice driving and take a pre-licensing course

Once you have obtained your learner’s permit, you must engage in supervised driving practice as well as a pre-licensing course or a driver education course before taking your road test. Locate a driving school where you may practice supervised driving. Find out how to enroll in a pre-licensing course and prepare for your road test in this article.

Step 4: Pass a road test

After you have completed your road test, the examiner will provide you with information on how to obtain your findings. If you pass your driving test, you will be eligible to obtain an interim license that will allow you to drive. To avoid confusion, keep the interim license with your picture learner permit until your new license is sent in the mail (in about 2 weeks). For those over the age of 17, if you already have a junior driver license or limited junior driver license and have successfully completed an approved state-approved high school driver education course or college driver education course, you may be eligible for a senior driver license (Class D or M). You must go to a DMV office in order to convert your junior license to a senior license. You must have your junior license as well as the Student Certificate of Completion (MV-285), which you got from your instructor, with you.

If you do not upgrade your junior license to a senior license before reaching the age of eighteen, you will be subject to the limitations that apply to junior drivers until you reach the age of eighteen.

This is true even if you have the completion certificate with you. You can also provide your certificate together with your junior permit to the licensing examiner when you take your road examination.

When you turn 18

In the event that you are not qualified for a senior license before the age of 18, you will automatically get a senior license in the mail after you reach the age of 18.

Additional information

Following the successful completion of your road test or restoration of a revoked driving license, you will be subject to a 6-month probationary term. If you are guilty of any of the following during this period, your license will be suspended for 60 days.

  • Speeding, engaging in a speed contest, reckless driving, following too closely, using a mobile phone, using a portable electronic device (for example, a smart phone, tablet, GPS, or MP3 player), and any two other moving offences are all prohibited.

After the suspension term has ended, you will be subjected to a second six-month probationary period. You will lose your driving privileges for at least 6 months if you are convicted of one of the offences listed above (or two additional moving infractions) during your second probation period. When the revocation period is through, you will be required to serve another six-month probationary period.

Your first license is valid for 5 years

The expiration date of your learner permit becomes the expiration date of your driver license if you have a Class D, Class DJ, or Class E driver license. The learner permit and driving license are both valid for a maximum of five years when used together. When you apply for a learner permit and a driving license, you are required to pay a charge that is valid for the duration of the papers’ validity. Example: A learner permit that you received in 2014 will be valid until your birthday in 2019, if you were awarded the permit in 2014.

After passing your road test in 2017, your driver’s license will expire the following year in 2019.

When you upgrade from a Class DJ junior license to a Class D senior license, the expiration date remains the same as before.

  1. 1.According to Section 250 (5) of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, a resident is defined as: “This section defines the word “resident” as one who resides in this state with the goal of making it his or her permanent residence. Presumptive proof of residency in this state must be established by the fact that a person has maintained a place of habitation in this state for at least ninety days during that time.” It is considered “presumptive proof” that you have lived in New York State for 90 days if you have lived in a house, a residence, an apartment, a room, or other comparable location for at least 90 days during that time. This can be used as evidence by a police officer to give you a traffic citation if you are driving in New York State without a valid New York State driver license or vehicle registration card. A court will evaluate the legislation as well as the evidence of your purpose before determining whether or not you are a resident of New York. If you pay taxes in another state or your children attend school in another state, a judge will examine these factors while determining whether or not you intend to make New York State your “fixed and permanent” home. Students from other states or from other countries who attend school in New York State are generally not regarded to be citizens of the state, according to this statute. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) does not determine whether you are a resident of New York State, whether you must get a New York State driving license, or if you must register your car in New York State.
