Can I Renew a Suspended License?

If you have three or more outstanding parking fines on your record, or if your license has been suspended or revoked, you will not be able to renew your Michigan driver’s license. If you have changed your name, you must notify the Social Security Administration of the change before you may renew your license or permit. Do I Need a REAL-ID?

Starting on October 1, 2021, passengers traveling by plane will be obliged to provide an improved identification card, often known as a REAL-ID. Additionally, a conventional driver’s license will not be accepted as a federal identification document for entering certain military and government establishments. If you do not require access to any of the items listed above, or if you already have a valid federal ID such as a passport, you can choose to keep your basic driver’s license. Otherwise, having a REAL-ID will save you a lot of time and bother when traveling.

Michigan Secretary of State to simplify driver’s license renewal starting in March

Starting in March, the Michigan Department of State intends to reduce the amount of time it takes to renew your driver’s license or state identification card by modernizing its online services and self-service kiosks. You may have to pay a few dollars more for this service. However, if you despise long lines, it could be worthwhile. In addition to driver’s license and state ID transactions, the department said the upgrade will enable the 135 automated, self-service stations in its offices and some Kroger and Meijer shops around the state to accept driver’s license and state ID transactions.

  • “This update will enable us to operate at a higher level than ever before.” At the same time, the government warns that if you want to receive standard services via mail, you should plan on waiting longer to receive plates, tabs, licenses, and identification cards.
  • Additionally, for one week, the upgrading services will be temporarily unavailable due to the modification.
  • All of the machines take credit and debit cards, as well as cash in some instances.
  • As an addition to delivering instruction in English, the stations will also provide it in Spanish, Arabic, and Vietnamese, among other languages.
  • Other new services are as follows:
  • Obtaining information about the current status of the desired driver’s license or state ID
  • In addition, adding a motorcycle endorsement to a driver’s license that qualifies
  • Obtaining your driving record by requesting it and obtaining it
  • More stations, at branch offices and other sites, are planned in the future. In addition, the department is streamlining the graded driver licensing procedure in order to decrease the number of trips by customers to branch offices. Michigan Drivers License Renewal

On July 15, 2021, an update was made. As of 2019, Michigan is one of the top ten states in the United States for the number of licensed drivers, with over 7 million licensed people. Surprisingly, just 2,831,499 automobiles were registered in 2019 among the more than 7 million licensed drivers in the country. It is possible that the low number of automobile registrations is due to the success of public transit. It is estimated that 82 transportation systems operate in the Great Lake State, with 21 of those systems located in urban areas.

What documents do I need and how do I renew my Michigan driver’s license are both important questions. These are excellent questions. If your Michigan driver’s license is about to expire, it’s critical that you have it renewed before the expiration date approaches. The process of renewing your Michigan drivers license is rather straightforward, but there are a few things you should be aware of before you begin, including how to renew your license, what documents you’ll need, and how much it will cost.

This tutorial was written to clearly explain how to renew a driver’s license in the state of Michigan.

How to Renew Your Michigan Driver’s License

If you live in the state of Michigan, you have three options for renewing your driver’s license: online, in person, or through mail. When you get your driver’s license renewal notification from the Secretary of State, it will describe the many choices available to you for renewing your license. Even if you renewed your driver’s license by mail the previous year, you’ll need to renew it in person this year since the Michigan Secretary of State requires in-person renewal every eight years. A driver’s license with upgraded features can never be renewed online.

Renewing an Expired License in Michigan

Your Michigan driver’s license will expire on the same day of your birthday every four years. There is, however, one exception to this general norm. If you’re under the age of 21, your Michigan driver’s license will expire on the day of your 21st birthday, regardless of when you obtained it initially. It is critical to renew your license before it expires since the criteria for renewal differ depending on whether your license is valid, expired, suspended, or otherwise lost.

Required License Renewal Forms and Documentation

The process for renewing your Michigan driver’s license varies based on how you’re renewing. You only need to fill out some basic information, such as your eye color and date of birth, and then pay the renewal price if you are renewing your license on the internet. If you’re renewing by mail, all you have to do is fill out and sign your renewal notification, as well as send in your payment for the renewal cost. In addition, renewing in person is a rather straightforward procedure. To renew your Michigan drivers license, all you need to do is present your current license or another form of identification as well as your social security number, have a vision examination and a picture, and pay the renewal price.

Michigan License Renewal Fees

In Michigan, the charge for renewing your driver’s license is really rather inexpensive, at only $10. The cost of renewing a regular license is simply $18, which is really reasonable. If you fail to renew your license by the deadline, a late fee of $7 will be charged to your account. When renewing your chauffeur’s license, commercial license, moped/motorcycle license, etc., the charge will be different. On the Michigan Secretary of State’s website, you can find a comprehensive list of fees.

Replacing a Lost or Stolen Driver’s License

The majority of the information provided here is only applicable if you renew your license on time. Michigan drivers license renewal procedures differ slightly if you’re renewing under unusual circumstances such as if your license is expired, enhanced, suspended and/or if your license has been lost or stolen, among other things. Moreover, if you happen to misplace your driver’s license and want a replacement, you’ll be required to present extra identification. In this instance, acceptable forms of identification include a United States military identity card, a government-issued identification card, or a United States passport.

For drivers who have had their licenses suspended, they must pay all costs in order to have their licenses reinstated.

The charge for reinstatement is $125 in most cases.

If your license has expired, you can still renew it, but you will be charged a $7 late renewal fee. If, on the other hand, your license has been expired for four or more years, Michigan license renewal requirements require you to repeat both the written and driving components of your examination.

Check Driver’s License Status in Michigan

Your driving record may be obtained from the Michigan Secretary of State if you want to check on the status of your driving privileges.

Grace Period Extended for Michigan License, Plate Renewals

Associated Press writer DAVID EGGERT contributed to this report. LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The city of Lansing is preparing to host the NCAA tournament. Michigan drivers whose license or registration expires between April and the end of the week will have an additional 120 days to renew it without being charged late fees under new laws that also prohibit late fees in general unless the secretary of state reinstates the practice of allowing people to conduct same-day service at a branch without making an appointment with the department.

A 13-month grace period came to an end on March 31, resulting in a backlog of transactions.

With the passage of time, the governor added, “it is critical that we continue to provide services at our secretary of state that are tailored to meet the requirements of all citizens.” After negotiating a deal with lawmakers, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democrat, has expressed support for the legislation.

Political Cartoons

She has come under fire from lawmakers in recent months for making a minor change that required consumers to make an appointment before visiting a branch permanent. According to her, walk-in customers are served immediately if there is availability, informed when the next opening is scheduled and invited to wait or return, or assisted in scheduling a return visit — which is frequently the following day — by staff. “We are delighted to be entering a new age of services at our offices that are more efficient and convenient than ever before,” said Benson, who was a vocal critic of the previous take-a-number method of registration.

Unless the Department of State enables for same-day in-person transactions to be performed without an appointment, the Department of State is prohibited from charging late renewal costs under the law.

(Photo courtesy of Lauren Gibbons | MLive) LANSING, Michigan — A bundle of laws signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Thursday will extend the grace period for Michigan drivers whose license or registration expires between April and Saturday, August 1, to provide them more time to renew their license or registration. It is possible that the Secretary of State would amend its policy to offer same-day service without an appointment across the state’s branch offices, which would allow drivers whose papers have expired during the time to renew them without being charged late fines.

  1. Whitmer stated that the package will provide Michiganders with greater choices when it comes to renewing some papers that require in-person assistance.
  2. Ruth Johnson, R-Holly, who was also a former Secretary of State, amid requests from Republican legislators for a return to same-day services without an appointment.
  3. Benson has also been criticized by Johnson for not using federal funds to boost staffing at branches to help address the backlog created during the pandemic.
  4. Residents of Michigan have long been able to renew their car registration or driver’s licenses online or through a Secretary of State kiosk in a grocery store, but many transactions still need a visit to a branch office, according to the state.
  5. The Secretary of State has stated that it intends to continue growing its capacity in order to give citizens with additional alternatives for receiving services.
  6. The governor also signed Senate Bill 60, Senate Bill 372, Senate Bill 459, House Bill 4735, House Bill 4656, and House Bill 4980, as well as many other pieces of legislation.
  7. SOS will open earlier and stay open longer in an ongoing effort to reduce the backlog of calls.
