Wisconsin DMV Official Government Site – DMV customer service centers
The COVID-19 (Coronavirus) virus has been updated. Customers seeking a driving license or identification card can visit any of the DMV locations. The majority of clients may renew their driver’s licenses online. All car transactions must be completed online, over the mail, or through third-party agents. Please take notice of the following:
- It is now possible to renew a driver license until May 21, 2021 for drivers aged 60 and over who have acquired a driving license expiration extension as a result of COVID-19. Please make arrangements to renew your membership. Renewals of most driver’s licenses and other identification cards can be completed online. Renewing your vehicle registration should be done either by mail or online prior to the renewal date. To allow for social distance, DMV Service Centers are mandated to limit the number of consumers allowed into the facility. It is possible that you will be asked to wait outside. It is necessary to use masks.

- For those with physical limitations that make standing difficult, please move to the front of any lines and inform the staff member of your condition. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us. You are welcome to wait until your position in line at the front of the information desk is called
- The DMV does not provide all services at every location. If the service you want is not listed, please verify with the DMV to ensure that it is available. Customer service centers do not accept applications that have been mailed in. Appleton, Eau Claire, La Crosse, Madison East (Bartillon Dr.), Milwaukee Northwest (Mill Rd.), Milwaukee Southwest (Grange Ave.), and Wausau are among the locations that provide Saturday morning hours. There will be no business operations at these locations during legal holidays, including the Saturday before Memorial Day and the Saturday following Thanksgiving. Written examinations for Class D (normal license) and Class M (motorcycle license) take around 45 minutes to complete each time. We ask that you give enough time to finish your examinations before the DMV closes at the specified hour. DMV customer service locations accept cash, checks, debit cards, and the following credit cards: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. DMV customer service centers are located across the state. Debit cards will be processed as if they were credit cards. We accept most major credit and debit cards, as well as ACH (Automated Clearing House) transfers from your bank or savings account, for online transactions. Except for service animals properly trained to assist a person with a handicap, which are permitted at DMV Customer Service Centers, no pets are permitted in DMV facilities.
Contacts with the DMV are handled by our phone center in Madison, which may be reached at (608) 264-7447. Due to routine system maintenance, this service may be unavailable on Sundays between the hours of 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.

REAL ID Update:
The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has extended the deadline for full implementation of REAL ID to May 3, 2023.
Minnesotans are recommended to utilize the online pre-application tool before visiting their local driver’s license office to ensure that they have all of the necessary paperwork with them when they arrive.
Every air traveler 18 years of age or older will need a REAL ID, enhanced driver’s license or ID, passport or passport card oranother acceptable form of IDto fly within the United States or enter federal facilities beginning May 3rd, 2023. A standard Minnesota driver’s license will not be accepted for federal use as of that date, but it will still be a valid form of identification and valid for lawful driving privileges.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has extended the deadline for complete implementation of REAL ID to May 3, 2023 from the original date of December 31, 2018. Minnesotans are recommended to use the online pre-application tool before visiting their local driver’s license office to ensure that they have all of the necessary paperwork with them when they visit.

You must provide a copy of your most recent driver’s license. It will be necessary to take a vision test and a photograph. Application forms signed by a parent or guardian are required for applicants under the age of eighteen. On the application, you will be asked to provide your Social Security Number. We are unable to transfer an out-of-state driver’s license to Minnesota until extra testing has been completed. New Residents can be found here.

To renew a CDL license, you must also provide a copy of your citizenship documentation once, which must be done before the renewal can be completed. If a person’s name is changed, further identification requirements will be imposed. If your name has changed, you must notify Social Security first so that they may update their records. In the case of applicants under the age of 18, the application must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.
