Driver’s License Types

The age at which you receive your Indiana driver’s license is deemed to be under 21. If you are under 21, your license is considered to be probationary. To be eligible for a probationary driver’s license in Indiana, you must be at least 18 years old and have held a learner’s permit for a minimum of 180 days (approximately six months).

Standard Driver’s License

Unless you are younger than 21 years of age, your Indiana driver’s license is not subject to the probationary period.

  • What is the validity of my driver’s license? If you are a citizen of the United States, you may renew your driver’s license up to twenty-four (24) months before it expires. You are not needed to take a written exam while renewing your driver’s license unless you have collected six or more points on your driving record since your previous renewal or your license has been expired for more than 180 days at the time of renewal. It is possible to renew your driver’s license at any BMV location up to 30 days before the expiration of your license if you hold valid permanent or temporary resident status. If you have Temporary Legal Status, your license is valid until the end of the period of your lawful presence OR for the period of time specified in your permit.

Examinations and Screening

Written Test
