  5. Writing a letter to the Canada Revenue Agency in order to obtain your slips does not guarantee success.

We may typically get the tax slips on your behalf if you contact TaxWatch Canada and permit us to do so with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).There is no obligation on the part of TaxWatch Canada to provide you with this service. If all else fails, your final option is to file only one year of your tax returns for which you have all of the information (hopefully a recent year) – you will then receive an assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency for this one year, and you can call them and they will identify you and send you whatever information they have available to them.

  1. The Catch is no longer there.
  2. If you haven’t filed in a while and are afraid about’revealing’ yourself to the CRA, give us a call beforehand so that we can discuss this fair worry with you in further detail (1-877-800-9343).
  3. If you desire a tax slip for the current year, you must request one from your employer or tax issuer.
  4. In the event that you have lost your tax slips for EI, CPP, and/or OAS, you can access both previous and current tax slips online by visiting the Service Canada website.
  5. Warning: There will be a penalty.

Even if the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has a copy of your t-slip, you might be fined up to 20 percent of the amount of income (unreported) that was on the slip that was not included in your return.Keep in mind that there may be other documents that are relevant to your tax return that the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) does not have copies of and/or is unable to provide you with, such as T2202A slips for tuition deductions, T5008 slips for certain capital gains/losses, and some RRSP contributions, among others. It may be necessary to receive these documents directly from the original issuer.Medical expenditure receipts are not kept on file by the government, so if you are missing them, contact the CRA.

  • In many cases, you may acquire expense records from your pharmacist – simply ask for the yearly tax printout for the years in question.

How far back can HMRC investigate?

  • Tax Investigations Tax Investigation Frequently Asked Questions How far back in time may HMRC go in its investigation? The further back HMRC goes in its investigation, the more severe they believe the situation to be. If they suspect willful tax avoidance, they can go back as far as 20 years in their investigations. Inquiries into negligent tax returns may often go back six years, but investigations into benign mistakes can go back as far as four years in some cases. When conducting an inquiry, it is common to begin by looking at the previous year’s tax return. The following are the conclusions HMRC will reach during their investigation into your most recent documents: there have been no mistakes, in which case they can close the investigation
  • there have been mistakes due to an innocent error, in which case they can go back 4 years
  • the mistake was due to your negligence, in which case they can go back 6 years
  • the mistake was a deliberate attempt to avoid paying tax, in which case they can go back 20 years
  • and there have been no mistakes due to an innocent error, in which case they can close the investigation

HMRC has the right to modify its position on the cause of any errors or omissions at any point throughout the inquiry. For example, if HMRC first feels that a mistake was a one-time, harmless blunder but later discovers evidence of persistent carelessness, the inquiry will be expanded to examine farther back in time, resulting in the department asking further information. It is also possible for HMRC to initiate an inquiry into a person’s finances if it gets information about the subject from sources other than the tax return. For example, Land Registry records or offshore banking details can be used to initiate an investigation. These investigations may be traced back for an equal amount of time.

  1. More information on how to determine if HMRC is investigating you may be found here.
  2. Of course, the further back the HMRC intends to go in its inquiry, the more stressful and onerous a tax investigation may be for many individuals.
  3. The quantity of information and detail demanded by HMRC may be daunting, therefore it is critical to get competent advice as soon as possible to help you make the best decisions possible, including whether or not it is acceptable to challenge HMRC’s conclusions.
  4. If you haven’t already done so, we strongly advise you to consult with an attorney regardless of where you are in the tax inquiry process.
  5. If you would like to learn more about how we can assist you in addressing your concerns and resolving your problems, we would be delighted to provide you with an initial, no-obligation consultation by telephone or email (whichever we believe will be the most convenient and clearest for you) to confirm – if we can help you (which we usually can), how we can do so, and to provide you with a cost estimate so that you can decide whether or not you wish to proceed.
