What the Mail Backlog at the IRS Means for You

How big is the backlog of mail?

Is the backlog solely due to COVID-19?

  • Are being threatened with imminent unfavorable action
  • Are being threatened with immediate adverse action
  • If relief is not granted, it might result in serious financial consequences
  • Who have suffered a delay of more than 30 days, and/or have not received a response or resolution to their issue from the IRS by the scheduled deadline

Processing Form 8288-Bs for reduced rates of tax withholding by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) can be “hit or miss.” These forms are sometimes handled promptly, and other times they are not. Are State Taxing Authorities Experiencing the Same Problems with Backlogs?

Many state tax authorities, like the Internal Revenue Service, have been experiencing difficulties with mail backlogs and COVID-19 shutdowns. The severity of the obstacles has differed from state to state. Some taxation authorities were reportedly not processing mailed-in returns at one time during the COVID-19 shutdowns, according to reports that arose early in the shutdowns. Many other states, such as Maryland, have set specified deadlines (for example, April 15, 2020) by which they will temporarily halt processing of returns that are mailed to them until the COVID-19 limitations have been removed.

  • On September 30, 2020, President Donald Trump approved a stopgap funding agreement to keep the United States government running until the middle of December. However, a budget for fiscal year 2021 has not yet been approved, and it is uncertain what the budget will include for the IRS.
  • The makeup of the United States House of Representatives, Senate, and Presidency will be altered by the federal elections set for November 3, 2020. (and thus Cabinet). The findings might have an impact on future IRS funding and objectives.

After you have filed your return

The majority of refunds are processed within 6-8 weeks of filing your return. It’s also vital to remember the following:
