How to Request IRS Verification of Nonfiling Letter
People who do not file taxes are required to provide an IRS notice of nonfiling status to the University as part of the verification process for financial aid, according to the Department of Education. A nonfiling letter will be required for any and all persons in the custodial home (i.e. student, parent 1, parent 2, spouse) who did not file their taxes during the tax season.
What is an IRS Verification of Nonfiling Letter?
An IRS Verification of Nonfiling Letter (VNF) will confirm to you that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has no record of you filing a tax form (1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ) for the tax year you have specified in your request. An unfiled VNF does not prove that you were not obligated to file; rather, it demonstrates that you did not file. If your FAFSA is selected for verification for any academic year in which you stated “Will not file,” you will be required to obtain a VNF for the prior-prior year in order to continue your education (eg.
for 2019-2020, request a VNF for 2017). Non-filers can seek an IRS Verification of Nonfiling from the IRS in one of three methods, all of which are free of charge:
- Making an appointment with your local taxpayer support center
- Submitting a form online
- Mailing a form
Note that if you filed an income tax return for the territory of Puerto Rico or for a foreign country, you must present acceptable nonfiling proof from the appropriate tax authorities.
