Consequences of Not Filing Your Tax Forms

Noncompliance with the filing requirement may result in a variety of penalties, including but not limited to the following:

  • Requests to change one’s status in the future (particularly to that of a Permanent Resident) are denied. Refusal to renew visas at American consulates and embassies abroad
  • Taxpayers who fail to declare income will be subject to fines and interest, which may result in them owing the IRS more money in the future. If a tax return is filed more than three years late, the Internal Revenue Service will not issue a refund to the taxpayer.

  • The Forgot ID link will take you to a page where you may reset your user ID or password if necessary.

We recommend that you mail using “Certified Mail.” Please keep in mind that if you are designated a non-resident for tax purposes in the United States, you will not be able to electronically submit (E-file) your tax forms.

3. If you had US income during 2021, you may need to file a state tax return

State taxation may have different residence requirements than federal taxation. Sprintax is a service that allows you to file your state taxes for a charge. Sprintax may be accessed in two straightforward ways:

  1. Either use GTP and then follow the internal connection to Sprintax from there
  2. Or go directly to Sprintax. In either case, make sure to use your @nyu.edu email address in order to receive a special discount. In order to qualify for the discounted cost, Stern and Law School students must use their @nyu.edu email address. If you use your @stern.nyu.edu or @law.nyu.edu email address, the system will not recognize you.

It is possible that you will be required to file for each state in which you have resided and/or worked in for the year 2021. Keep in mind that if you’re using Sprintax and filing as a nonresident for US tax reasons, you will not be able to electronically submit (E-file) your tax return.

People whose state and federal income tax forms show that they will get a tax refund this year can use the Internet to find out when their refund will be received by the IRS or their state tax agency. Review Documents and Information You May Need

Choose the forms and papers from the list below that are most relevant to your needs and fill them out. If you received money from sources in the United States, you will receive one or more tax forms (W-2, 1042-S, 1099) that will detail the kind, source, and amount of income received. Follow the Instructions in Sprintax to Complete Federal Tax Forms

Even if you didn’t have any income in the United States, Sprintax will prepare an accurate and full Form 8843 for you and each of your dependents. It is necessary for each dependant to send in their own 8843 in a separate envelope. If You Earned Money in the United States: Sprintax will generate:

  • Form 8843, completed for you (and each of your dependents)
  • A federal tax return, with either a 1040NR-EZ or a 1040NR, depending on your circumstances
  • And a copy of your state tax return. If you do not have an SSN or an ITIN, you must submit a W-7 application for one. See the section below on Special Situations.

Complete Your State Tax Return, If Applicable

An accurately filled-out Form 8843 for you (and each of your dependents); a completed federal tax return, which may be a 1040NR-EZ or a 1040NR, depending on your circumstances; and a copy of your state tax return. If you do not have a Social Security number or an ITIN, you must submit a W-7 application for one. Refer to the section below under “Special Situations.”

Log In and Create a Sprintax Account

Never file your tax return for the year 2021 unless you have all of your income statements together. A W-2 and a 1042-S are both issued to some students and scholars, depending on the sort of income they get. It is customary for the 1042-S to be issued within the first two weeks of March. You will be sent to the Sprintax/Columbia page after logging in with your UNI and password using the Columbia Portal provided below.

You will be required to establish a Sprintax account with a new username and password after this. Are you no longer employed at Columbia? Sprintax can be used in a variety of situations; see ” Special Situations ” below for further information.

Submit Your Completed Tax Forms By the Deadline

Remember to carefully read the thorough mailing instructions provided by Sprintax and to mail your package before the deadline*:

  • If you have filed a tax return for the year 2022, the deadline is April 18, 2022. The IRS has granted a one-month delay to the regular April 15th filing date
  • If you had no income and your 8843 was the only form you were required to file, you would have to file on June 15, 2022.

You must send an 8843 to each of your dependents in a separate envelope if you have any. By the deadline, your mail must have been date-stamped by the post office or receipted by a courier provider such as FedEx. Because nonresidents are unable to submit a combined tax return, an AJ-2 spouse who has job authorization and earned money will be required to file their individual tax return. By sending an email to the ISSO that services your school, you can request a Sprintax code. You can use the personal email address of a scholar adviser with whom you have previously communicated, or if you have not, you can use the following address: Following receipt of the code, you will be required to register for a Sprintax account by creating a username and password.

Enter the code to get the charge for the federal forms erased from your credit card statement.

  • Sprintaxin Step 4 can be accessed by students who have graduated, otherwise left a program, or who are on a leave of absence, regardless of whether they are based in the United States or elsewhere in the world
  • Students: In order to get a Sprintax code, scholars who have left Columbia and no longer have a valid UNI should contact their ISSO Scholar Services office, which may be found at the link below.
  • Following receipt of the code, you will be required to register for a Sprintax account by creating a username and password. You will be sent to a “checkout” page at the conclusion of the procedure. When you enter the code, you will no longer be charged for the federal forms.

Faculty and Scholar Services at the Morningside / Manhattanville campus of the ISSO Faculty and Scholar Services are provided by ISSO-CUIMC. When submitting a W-7 with your tax return, the Internal Revenue Service requires that your passport be certified (not notarized by a notary public). Certification that is up to date: In order for identification papers to be accepted by the IRS for processing, they must be certified by a third party. The following are acceptable certification methods:

  • A Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC) of the Internal Revenue Service can check your passport and authenticate your Form W-7 application. It is necessary to make an appointment. Bring your original tax return, W-7 application, and other supporting documentation. More information may be found here. Here is where you can find aNY TAC. The certification is provided by the issuing agency, which is the organization (governmental office or department) that issued the document. Depending on your country of origin, it may be possible to have your passport certified at your Consulate in New York
  • However, this is not guaranteed. Certification as a consular officer in the United States

Alternatively, you can contact Human Resources to obtain a reimbursement if you believe that Social Security/Medicare taxes (also known as FICA) were withheld in error by Columbia by filing thisServiceNow Formor contacting the HR Service Center at 212-851-2888. If this tax was withheld by another employer, you can request that they handle the refund on your behalf. If they do not want to or are unable to do so, you can make a claim with the Internal Revenue Service for a refund. Sprintax will prepare the documents on your behalf for a charge, or you can file Form 843 yourself.

If you owe money, you must submit for a 6-month extension by April 15th, but you must also make a payment at the time of filing.

It is possible to file an updated tax return if you discover that you made a mistake on your current year’s or preceding year’s income tax return, or if you accidentally filed a resident tax return when you should have filed a nonresident alien tax return. Sprintax can take care of it for you, but there is a cost. TAXES – International Student and Scholar Services

If you were physically present in the United States while in F or J status at any time between January 1 and December 31, 2020, you are required to submit a single form, Form 8843, to the United States tax agency IRS (Internal Revenue Service), even if you earned no money during that time period. If you made any money in the United States in 2020, you will very certainly be subject to extra filing obligations, both federal and state, depending on the amount of income received. For further information, please see the information and resources listed below.


Before You File

Together with Sprintax, we are offering you simple tax preparation software built specifically for nonresident students, scholars, alumni, and their dependents who are studying, working, or studying abroad in the United States. Individual tax advice is not provided by the ISSS employees since they are neither qualified or permitted to do so.

What to Expect

  • For the purposes of federal taxation, you are either a resident or a nonresident. In the first few minutes after logging in to Sprintax, you will be asked a series of questions concerning your time spent in the United States and your immigration status at various points in time over the course of several years. Sprintax will then decide whether or not you are subject to taxation. If Sprintax concludes that you are a “nonresident alien” (NRA) for federal tax reasons, you can continue to utilize Sprintax to answer a series of guided questions until the process is completed. Nonresidents should not use alternative tax software, such as TurboTax, to e-file their returns if Sprintax finds that they are nonresidents
  • These software solutions do not give accurate information for nonresidents. Depending on the Sprintax program, you may be able to e-file your tax return or print, sign, and submit your tax return to the Internal Revenue Service once you have completed the preparation process (Internal Revenue Service.) If Sprintax detects that you are a resident alien for federal tax purposes, you will no longer be allowed to use Sprintax
  • Nonetheless, we have compiled a list of resources for submitting a resident tax return
  • Form 8843 is required for all nonresident Fs and Js, regardless of whether or not they received any income. If you did not have any income in the United States: There is only one need, which is Form 8843. The form 8843 is an informative statement that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires to demonstrate that you were in the United States and are a Nonresident Alien (NRA). How to File Your Non-Resident Tax Forms (F and J)

The materials you may or may not get are determined by your individual circumstances.

  1. Visa/Immigration status information, including form I-20 (F status) or form DS-2019 (J status)
  2. Current and previous travels to the United States of America
  3. And current and previous visa/Immigration status information Additionally, you may see or print your United States travel history here
  4. Your Social Security or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
  5. And your birth date and gender here. This is necessary if you had income to report in the United States, but it is not required if you have no income and the 8843 is the only form you need to complete
  6. The W-2 is not required. If you worked, you must fill out this form to record your wage earnings. If you worked for more than one company, you should receive a W-2 form from each company. It is issued by the end of January for the preceding year’s performance. Make certain that all of your previous employers have your most recent mailing address. You should contact your employer for a copy of your Form W-2 if you worked in the United States and did not get one
  7. 1042-S This form is used to report the following types of income: (1) stipends, scholarships, fellowships, and travel awards. Tuition exemption or reduction is not taxable income, unless it is (1) income covered by a tax treaty, or (2) income covered by a tax treaty. It is not necessary to complete Form 1042-S if you have received a scholarship or grant that is greater than the cost of tuition and fees. You should consult your Human Resources (HR) office if you are working on campus and feel you should have gotten an IRS Form 1042-S as a result of a tax treaty. ii.Only nonresident aliens are eligible to obtain this document. If your tax status changes to that of a Resident Alien as a result of your having lived in the United States for more than 5 years, you will not be issued a 1042-S. If you are unsure of your tax status, you may verify it by logging into Sprintax
  8. 1099. This form is used to declare unspecified revenue. Interest on bank accounts, equities, bonds, dividends, and earnings from freelance jobs are all examples of taxable income. This form is not required and cannot be used to file a nonresident tax return since nonresident aliens are not qualified to receive education cost tax credits under the Internal Revenue Code. If, on the other hand, you have become a resident for federal tax purposes, the Office of Student Accounts contains information on Form 1098-T. X 1095-A, 1095-B, 1095-C, 1095-D These forms, which disclose healthcare coverage, are not required for a Nonresident tax return

At this point, you will need to enter an access code that was issued to you through email from ISSS.

Sprintax will eliminate the charge associated with preparing your federal income tax return if you use this access code.

Sprintax will remember your information so that you may log in and out without having to enter it all over again. In addition, if you continue to use Sprintax in later years, your information will be retained and accessible.

3. Follow Sprintax instructions

You will receive a completed Form 8843 for yourself and each of your dependents if you did not have any income in the United States (if you have any). If you have income in the United States, Sprintax will prepare your “tax return papers,” which are the form 1040NR. When you provide the information for your dependents, Sprintax will produce an entirely finished Form 8843 for each and every one of them.

4. If applicable, complete your state tax return

Sprintax will notify you if you are required to file a state tax return as a result of your earnings after you have completed your federal tax return. New York Tax Return

  • Undergraduate students enrolled in a degree program in New York State are always considered nonresidents by the state. Graduate students and J scholars’ tax residence status is established by the number of days they spent in New York during the tax year (more or less than 183 days) and whether or not they had a place to dwell for at least 11 months during that time period. As stated in the 2009 amendment to allow an exception for undergraduate students, “the amendment does not provide an exemption for graduate students who are pursuing a post-baccalaureate degree.” Students who get a1042-Sreporting taxable income from a fellowship stipend or travel grant should be aware that federal taxes are withheld, but New York State taxes are not, and as a result, you will most likely owe taxes on your New York State tax return. 5. Mail your completed federal forms to IRS by the deadline

The Internal Revenue Service will begin collecting tax returns on February 12, 2021.
