Every year, con artists posing as IRS agents or other government workers attempt to defraud students and academics by demanding money that is “due” in order to avoid so-called tax fines or fees. Please be on the lookout for and wary when receiving such calls, emails, letters, or other strange communications.

Free Assistance

  • It is important to schedule an appointment with the IRS Tax Assistance Center (TAC). An IRS specialist can provide answers to a wide range of federal tax questions. If your ITIN application is refused, please consult with an OGS adviser before proceeding to the IRS TAC
  • Otherwise, your application will be rejected. Turbotax is an online tax preparation service that allows residents to prepare their federal and state tax returns. Individuals with straightforward tax returns and few deductions may benefit the most from the free edition. If you have a more intricate tax situation, the premium versions would be beneficial. In the case of nonresident filers, they will be sent to Sprintax. Income Tax Help (VITA): Volunteers who have received IRS training and certification provide free basic tax filing assistance to nonresident and resident tax payers. Beta Alpha Psi, the accounting fraternity at NYU Stern, is a VITA site situated in the Stern School of Business that provides assistance to residents who are filing their taxes.

Tax Treaties

Tax treaties with other countries are in the hundreds for the United States. The advantages offered to students, the types of income that are covered, the total amount of the exemption, and the number of years that you may claim the benefit vary depending on the treaty you are referring to. If you submit your tax returns using appropriate tax software, the program will automatically account for any benefits that your nation may be entitled to as a result of a tax treaty with another country. New York Codes, Rules and Regulations


For the most part, the same regulations that apply to any other taxpayer apply to a decedent when it comes to submitting their New York State personal income tax returns.

When filing a tax return for the decedent’s taxable year that ends on the day of his death, make sure to include the time period during which he was alive.
